Job summary

Spring Branch Independent School District in Houston, TX seeks a Substitute Bus Assistant to ride on buses and support the driver in providing a safe, orderly trip for passengers when a regular assistant is absent.

The position requires a high school diploma (preferred), being 18 or older, strong communication, and mature judgment, plus the ability to evacuate passengers in an emergency. You will help manage students, assist with special needs, and participate in safety trainings.

Qualifications

Primary Purpose

Ride on the bus to assist the driver in providing a safe and orderly trip for the passengers when a regular assistant is absent.

Qualifications / Skills

• High school diploma or equivalent (preferred).
• Must be 18 years and older.
• Ability to work with fellow employees.
• Mature judgment.
• Proficient oral and written communication skills.
• Physically able to climb in and out of the school bus emergency door to assist in evacuating the bus in an emergency.

Experience

• Day care, nursing home or related experience dealing with special needs individuals (preferred).

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Student Management:

• Maintain student discipline on bus.
• Assist fragile pupils with special needs.
• Maintain personal conduct and appearance that serves as an example to children.

Safety:

• Aid driver in maintaining order and safety.
• Perform emergency bus evacuation of students on bus if needed: walk to rear of bus, exit the rear door, and/or lift students in emergency situations.

Other:

• Maintain cleanliness of bus interior.
• Participate in cross training.
• Establish and maintain a good rapport with students, parents, school personnel and co-workers.
• Attend in-service training classes and safety meetings as required by the department.
• Learn assigned routes in order to assist a substitute driver.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Equipment Used

Wheelchair lift ramp, locks, seatbelts, harnesses, car seats, special adaptive equipment.

• This position requires regular in-person interaction with the public.

• Frequent sitting, stooping, bending, pushing and pulling.
