PRIMARY PURPOSE:

A Bus Attendant shares responsibility with the driver for the care and safety of students being transported by bus to and from school.

All employees of SISD are expected to act with integrity, support organizational goals, communicate in a clear and respectful manner, championing the needs of our students and drive continuous improvement.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Minimum 18 years of age
  • Clearance on Criminal History Check

Preferred:

  • Job related experience
  • CPI training
  • CPR training
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS
  • Demonstrates an interest in and liking for children and young adults.
  • Capable of assessing situations in emergencies quickly and reacting with necessary measures for the protection and well-being of special needs children.
  • A Special Needs bus attendant will be physically capable of performing duties associated with special needs students such as lifting, kneeling and extended reach.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
  • Loading and unloading students
  • Evacuating students in emergency situations
  • Providing emergency assistance to special students as needed
  • Assisting driver in daily interior bus inspection
  • Maintaining and updating student records
  • Documenting and reporting inappropriate or unacceptable behavior
  • Maintaining discipline in a positive manner
  • Recognizing evidence of abuse and neglect
  • Assisting the driver in keeping interior of bus clean
  • Maintaining accurate time checks and student counts as required
  • Assisting the auxiliary driver with route directions and student management
  • Performing other related duties as assigned.

A wide variety of equipment is used to accommodate special needs students. It is necessary for bus attendant to be familiar with the design and operating procedures of this special equipment, as well as knowing how to conduct equipment inspections and make simple "field adjustments" during breakdowns.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: physical mobility, prolonged sitting, repetitive hand and arm motions, some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling. This position will also require traveling within the district. Mental demands: Maintain emotional control, ability to effectively communicate in both oral and written in English for safety reasons. Environmental Conditions: Work outside and inside; moderate exposure to extreme temperature (hot and cold) and vehicle fumes.
