Job description

Title: Bus Assistant

180 Days, $12.00/hour

Job Goal: Assist the bus driver with the day-to-day transportation and custodial needs of students.

Qualifications
  • Education equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade, preferably supplemented by training or coursework in child growth and development or a closely related field. One year of paid or volunteer experience working with multi-age groups of children is preferred.
  • Knowledge of:
    • Basic concepts of child growth and development, and developmental behavior characteristics;
    • Student behavior management strategies and techniques;
    • Appropriate English usage, punctuation, spelling, and grammar;
    • Basic arithmetic concepts;
    • Routine record management, storage, and retrieval systems and procedures.
  • Ability to:
    • Demonstrate an understanding, patient, and receptive attitude toward students of varied age groups and disabilities;
    • Communicate effectively in oral and written form in English as required by the assignment;
    • Understand and carry out oral and written directions;
    • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with children and adults.
Classification

This position is classified as a part‑time position and is subject to the rules, regulations, policies, and procedures of the Board of School Trustees. Pay is hourly based on the Teacher Assistant schedule.

Reports To

Bus Driver/Transportation Supervisor

Performance Responsibilities
  1. Assists pupils in loading and unloading.
  2. Checks to see that all seat belts are securely fastened.
  3. Sees that all special equipment is in place.
  4. Helps maintain good pupil behavior.
  5. Knows and implements safety procedures.
  6. Assists the driver in keeping required student transportation records.
  7. Assists the driver in the event of an emergency with the bus or with the students.
  8. Controls unexpected situations which may occur while children are on the bus, such as seizures, accidents, etc.
  9. Informs the driver when a problem arises.
  10. Communicates responsibly and clearly with parents, driver, administration, and school staff about problems and concerns.
  11. Operates special equipment.
  12. Performs other duties as assigned.
Physical Demands

The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position classification must perform in carrying out essential job functions.

  • Persons performing service in this position classification will exert 50 to 75 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects and persons.
  • This type of work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve running, walking or standing for brief periods.
  • Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far visual acuity, depth perception providing oral information, the manual dexterity to operate business related equipment, and handle and work with various materials and objects are important aspects of this job.
