Job description

Bus Assistant Summary

Assists the bus driver in providing safe transportation of special needs students to and from designated locations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assists driver in loading and unloading students, including securing wheelchairs, harnesses, seat belts and car seats.
  • Assists driver in maintaining good student conduct on the bus. Reinforces established rules.
  • Assists driver in developing positive reinforcement programs for individual students; reinforces positive student behavior on the bus.
  • Assists driver in providing written records of violations of the student code of conduct.
  • Supports and assists substitute driver in absence of assigned driver.
  • Maintains regular and prompt attendance.
  • Promotes good public relations for the school district and community.
  • Remains free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the school corporation.
  • Effectively completes all other job duties as assigned.

Supervises students.

Education and/or Experience

High School diploma or general education degree (GED).

Language Skills

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to complete simple reports.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide. Ability to perform these functions in completing Time Sheets.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving student behavior.

Other Skills and Abilities

Ability to work in a friendly manner with students, co-workers, parents, and school personnel. Ability to physically manage students and equipment. Be able to observe unusual student behavior and advise supervisor. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form. Ability to understand medical emergency procedures such as first aid and bus evacuation procedures. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and school board policies.

Qualifications Profile
  • Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying. Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of college level coursework or passing of examination as required by the No Child Left Behind Act.
  • Prior experience working with special needs children desirable.
