Job summary

United CNC Machining in Auburn Hills, MI, is seeking a Deburr Technician to remove burrs, sharp edges, and machining marks from precision aerospace and defense parts. You will mostly work by hand using files, scrapers, and abrasive tools, serving as the final finishing step before inspection.

Attention to detail matters more than speed; a single burr or damaged feature can scrap a high-value part. The role emphasizes quality and compliance with ITAR/CMMC requirements.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 1+ year of deburring, hand finishing, or machine shop experience preferred, ideally in aerospace, defense, or medical.
  • Ability to read and follow work instructions and basic blueprints; familiarity with GD&T a plus.
  • Ability to use basic measuring tools (calipers, scales); training provided on micrometers and gauges.
  • Experience with pneumatic die grinders, rotary deburring tools, and exotic alloys (titanium, Inconel) a plus.
  • Familiarity with AS9100 quality systems and FOD programs a plus.
  • Strong attention to detail, steady hands, and good near-vision (with or without correction).
  • Dependable attendance and willingness to work overtime when needed.
  • Must be a U.S. person under ITAR due to access to defense articles and technical data.

Responsibilities

  • Deburr, break edges, and blend machined parts in aluminum, stainless steel, titanium, Inconel, and other aerospace alloys using handfiles, scrapers, deburring blades, abrasive stones, Scotch-Brite, and sandpaper.
  • Operate pneumatic and electric hand tools (rotary tools, belt and disc sanders, tumblers or vibratory finishers) safely and to spec.
  • Read and interpret blueprints and work instructions to identify edge-break requirements, critical surfaces, and features that must not be touched.
  • Inspect own work visually and with basic measuring tools (calipers, radius gauges, magnification) before passing parts to Quality.
  • Handle parts carefully to prevent dings, scratches, and contamination of finished surfaces; use proper part protection and packaging.
  • Follow the process router for every job; complete required sign-offs and paperwork accurately and legibly.
  • Maintain lot traceability and part counts; keep parts from different jobs and lots segregated.
  • Identify and tag nonconforming parts and report issues to the lead or Quality right away (FOD, damage, out-of-tolerance features, missing operations).
  • Follow Foreign Object Debris (FOD) prevention practices and keep the work area clean and organized (5S).
  • Wear required PPE and follow all MIOSHA, company safety, and housekeeping rules, including proper use of dust collection and ventilation.
  • Protect controlled technical data in line with ITAR and CMMC requirements; do not photograph, copy, or remove drawings or parts from the facility.
  • Support continuous improvement by suggesting better methods, fixtures, or tooling.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including cross-training on secondary operations.
