Job summary

HDR is seeking a Building Structural Engineering Intern to join our Minnesota team. You’ll gain hands-on experience on projects ranging from buildings to foundations and water-related structures, with mentoring from engineers and project managers.

The role emphasizes applying standard engineering techniques, performing load calculations, design tasks, and assisting with drawing production, under supervision. Local enrollment and strong problem-solving are valued.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate Engineering program.
• Attention to detail and strong problem-solving skills.
• Good verbal and written communication abilities.
• Basic Microsoft Office skills and a collaborative mindset.

Responsibilities

• Gain real-world experience on projects including buildings, existing structures, foundations and light industrial facilities.
• Perform load calculations, analysis, design, spreadsheet development and drawing production.
• Review fabrication/shop drawings and conduct site observations as needed.
• Engage with mentoring programs to connect with peers and leaders.
• Apply standard engineering techniques under the supervision of an engineer or PM.

In the role of Building Structural Engineering Intern, we'll count on you to:

• Gain real-world experience on exciting projects including buildings, existing structures, water-bearing structures, foundations, light industrial, and other types of facilities
• Tasks include load calculations, analysis, design, spreadsheet development, drawing production, fabrication/shop drawing review, site observations, and other duties as needed
• Connect with recent college graduates and our company leaders through mentoring and young professionals programs
• Apply standard engineering techniques and procedures
• Perform assignments under the direct supervision of an engineer or project manager

Preferred Qualifications

• Prefer 2 years completed toward degree with 3.0+ GPA
• Demonstrated knowledge of software packages related to field of study/industry including Microsoft Excel, Revit, RISA, RAM, and STAAD
• Preference given to local candidates
• Structural steel and/or concrete design coursework completed
• Prefer current enrollment in civil, structural, or architectural engineering program
• Enthusiasm to learn and develop within the field of structural engineering
• Possess strong problem-solving and communication skills
