Job summary

HDR in Denver seeks a Structural Engineering Intern for Summer 2027. You will work with licensed structural engineers, engineers in training, and BIM designers to gain real-world experience applying your coursework and exploring a career in structural engineering after graduation.

You will learn to read drawings, participate in design and analysis, build structural models in Revit, visit projects under construction, and review fabrication drawings under supervision.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate Engineering program

Responsibilities

• Visit projects under construction to learn how structures are built and inspected
• Review fabrication (shop) drawings from contractors for conformance to the design drawings and specifications

HDR is seeking a Structural Engineering Intern for the Summer of 2027 in our Downtown Denver office. This is an excellent opportunity for a smart and motivated student to gain valuable structural engineering experience through a paid internship that may lead to full-time employment upon graduation.

To accomplish this, we work in integrated, multi-discipline design teams comprised of structural, electrical, mechanical, civil, environmental, and fire/life safety engineers; architects; and professionals and scientists from many other diverse disciplines from the inception of projects through the completion of their construction. The Job:

As a structural intern at HDR, you will work with a team of licensed structural engineers, engineers in training, and BIM designers in projects types and with diverse professionals as described above. Our goal will be to engage you in all facets of our work so that you will gain a better understanding of how your coursework is applied in real-world settings and inspire you to engage in a career in structural engineering upon graduation.

Specific responsibilities will include:

• Learn how to read and interpret engineering Drawings and Specifications (Contract Documents)
• Participate in engineering design and analysis to the extent that your knowledge and completed coursework will enable
• Help to produce structural models and drawings using Revit BIM software
• Visit projects under construction to learn how structures are built and inspected
• Review fabrication (shop) drawings from contractors for conformance to the structural engineering design drawings and specifications
• Perform other duties as required
• All of your work will be performed under the direct supervision of a licensed structural engineer.

We seek a smart, creative, and hard-working individual to join our team for the summer with potential for a career in the dynamic, diverse, and employee-owned culture of HDR. We’re looking for someone who isn’t just interested in designing buildings, but also applying structural engineering principles to solve diverse challenges like assessing structural adequacy of aging facilities, designing large liquid containing tanks, supporting heavy or vibrating equipment, retrofitting and repurposing existing structures, designing supports for heavy electrical wire and high-pressure pipe, and many other multi-discipline challenges… as well as designing buildings.

Preferred Qualifications

• 3.25 or higher overall grade point average.
• Minimum of 3 years completed towards bachelor’s degree.
• Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
• Ability to work in our office in downtown Denver on a daily basis for a minimum commitment of 9 weeks.
• An attitude that demonstrates a desire to learn, eagerness to serve clients and project teams, enthusiasm for collaboration with others, and desire to contribute to the success of our team.
• Demonstrated knowledge of software packages such as REVIT and structural analysis programs such as Enercalc, Tedds, Risa, or similar programs.
• Previous experience in engineering or construction environments.
• Some completed coursework in structural engineering curriculum and/or fundamental coursework in statics, structural analysis, or mechanics of materials.
