POSITION OBJECTIVE
Custodial Services strives to provide high quality, customer service‑oriented cleaning services to the university community. Building service workers provide routine and special cleaning services in campus buildings and residence halls, including restrooms, bathrooms, offices, classrooms, laboratories, and public areas. The nature and frequency of cleaning are performed according to Custodial Services’ Quality Control Program.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Dust all flat and vertical surfaces and windowsills daily, including desks, tables, chairs, file cabinets, windowsills, bookshelves, bookcases, walls, blinds, vent and radiator grills, ceilings, and light fixtures. (20%)
- In restrooms, clean and disinfect sinks, toilets, clean mirrors, mop bathroom floors daily, and shower rooms twice weekly. Disinfect shower curtains and police showers daily. Clean drinking fountains and emergency eyewashes, replenish all restroom supplies such as toilet paper, paper towels, and soap; request supplies in reasonable quantities to avoid shortages and overstocking. Turn in vending funds. Clean interior glass and all types of furniture. (15%)
- Spot clean walls, doors, partitions, switch plates, sweep, dust mop, wet mop, wax and spray buff floors. Vacuum, spot clean, and shampoo carpeting. Clean and replenish chalkboard, trays, and erasers. (10%)
- According to the assigned schedule: Shampoo furniture as needed. Clean washing machines, dryers, and common spaces in residential facilities daily; empty wastebaskets and recycling containers per procedures. Carry trash outside to pick‑up locations. (10%)
- Clean Venetian blinds, HVAC grills, handrails, elevator interiors and tracks, and light lenses. (10%)
- Assist in coordinating an appropriate level of supplies to assigned buildings, avoiding shortages, overstocking, and emergency orders. (10%)
- Communicate daily with supervisor to report achievements, progress, and problems. Actively seek and suggest improvements to operations. Report any quality control issues or problems identified in the building to the supervisor, and if possible make appropriate recommendations to solve the matter. Recognize when assistance, training, or direction is needed and assist as needed. Turn off lights in unoccupied rooms, lock doors in all rooms except classrooms, and secure all windows. (15%)
NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Keep assigned custodial closets clean and neat. Keep track of all equipment assigned to the building. Ensure that equipment is maintained in proper condition, and promptly turn equipment in for repair when needed. Assist co‑workers in other areas and buildings when necessary; assist security and maintenance staff during emergencies. Within assigned buildings, ensure that the university’s recycling programs are carried out. Identify areas where building occupants are not properly recycled and report it to the supervisor. Follow university safety procedures and use appropriate safety gear; use caution when mixing chemicals and operating electrical equipment; immediately report any accidents and injuries to supervisor. Be responsible for keys and turn in key ring after shift. Cooperate with Security at all times and assist as needed in emergencies. Shovel snow from building entrances and steps in emergencies. Duties not restricted to those mentioned. May be assigned other duties as required. (10%)

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position has no permanently assigned staff.
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: 3 years of experience required.
Education: High school education required.
REQUIRED SKILLS

- Must pass the required physical examination.
- Must be able to lift and carry up to fifty pounds; engage in frequent walking, standing, bending, stretching, and stair climbing; and operate power equipment such as high‑speed buffers or auto‑scrubbers.
- Ability to demonstrate successful support, education, and advocacy for all students, aligned with the values, mission, and messaging of the university, while adhering to the staff policy on conflict of commitment and interest.
- Ability to maintain consistent attendance.
- Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and customers face to face.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds; engage in frequent walking, standing, bending, stretching, and stair climbing; and operate power equipment such as high‑speed buffers. Must pass the required physical examination. The working environment may have occasional exposure to potential biological hazards. Typical shifts are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., 5 p.m. to 1 a.m., 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., or assigned shift. Overtime and emergency hours may be required. The university is a non‑smoking environment.
