Job summary

Affiliated Engineers, Inc. (AEI) in Gainesville seeks a Building Performance Consultant I to support energy-efficient building solutions. You’ll work with our team to evaluate design strategies using simulation tools and educate clients on innovative approaches.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, electrical, or architectural engineering or equivalent building systems experience.
• General understanding of building systems with knowledge in HVAC, electrical, lighting, or building envelope.
• Fundamental understanding of high-performance design including daylighting and life cycle concepts.
• Ability to use at least one building system simulation tool (EnergyPlus, IES-VE, TRNSYS, DOE-2/eQuest, TRACE, CFD, Radiance).
• Experience with engineering calculation programs and CAD/BIM software.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with the building performance practice team to evaluate design strategies.
• Apply CFD, daylighting, and energy modeling to inform design decisions and document performance.
• Educate clients, architects, and engineers on new technologies and solutions.

As a Building Performance Consultant I in our Gainesville office, you will help us empower our clients to achieve energy‑efficient building solutions, save global environments, and create a better, greener future for all.

Why We Need You

In this role, you will work with our building performance practice team to help evaluate building and system design strategies. The emphasis will be on using building, CFD, and daylight simulation tools to help inform design, as well as document performance compared to accepted standards. The Building Performance Consultant I will also work to educate clients, architects and engineers on new technologies and innovative solutions.

Expertise Of Our Most Successful Building Performance Consultant I

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, electrical, or architectural engineering (or another engineering discipline) from an accredited program; or commensurate degree and experience with building systems.
• General understanding of building systems across disciplines and fundamental knowledge in at least one discipline such as HVAC, plumbing/piping, electrical, lighting, instrumentation and controls, or building envelope systems.
• Fundamental understanding of major tenets of high‑performance design including renewable and alternative energy strategies, daylighting, embodied energy, indoor environmental quality, material composition, water efficiency, life cycle assessment, and built environment planning.
• Ability to use at least one building system simulation tool, including EnergyPlus, IES-VE, TRNSYS, DOE‑2 (eQuest), TRACE, CFD, or Radiance, for consulting and analysis.
• Experience in computer operation for building system analysis and engineering calculation programs.
• Ability to learn CAD/BIM software as necessary for building performance analysis and consulting.

Effective Skills To Help You Flourish

• Industry certification applicable to building performance including but not limited to AEE CEM, ASHRAE HPDP, ASHRAE BEMP, ASHRAE BEAP, Green Globes Professional, or LEED AP.
• Passed the Fundamentals of Engineering exam (FE).
• Knowledge of or ability to learn application programming language (C++, Ruby, Python, Visual Basic, etc.)
• Ability to access BIM Models.
• Strong spoken and written communications skills.
• Excellent organization and time management skills.
• Quick technical comprehension and motivation focused on client outcomes.
• Ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
• Effective working individually and within team environments.
