Job summary

The City of Port Townsend is seeking a Building Official to supervise the Building Division's daily operations, including permits administration, plan review, and inspections, ensuring compliance with adopted codes. The role acts as the lead in interpreting code provisions and coordinating with staff and customers.

You'll oversee Permit Technicians and inspectors, enforce construction regulations, and maintain current knowledge of building and fire codes, while fostering positive relationships

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED with 3 years in construction code administration.
• At least 1 year of lead or supervisory experience.
• ICC Building Official and Plans Examiner certifications required; if Plans Examiner only, Building Official to be obtained within 1 year.
• Washington Driver's License with acceptable driving record.

Responsibilities

• Enforce and interpret building, fire, and related codes per adopted City ordinances.
• Supervise Permit Technician and staff handling permits, plan reviews, and inspections.
• Administer building permits, certificates of occupancy, and related records.
• Perform plan reviews for residential and commercial projects for code compliance.
• Provide code interpretations and guidance to staff, residents, and contractors.
• Coordinate enforcement with City departments and outside agencies; participate in Preapplication Conferences.
