DEPARTMENT: Youth Department

FLSA STATUS: Full Time, Non-Exempt

POSITION SUMMARY

Performs a variety of skilled maintenance work for buildings and grounds including heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, plumbing, electrical, and carpentry work as well as routine maintenance and repairs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

This position description should not be interpreted as all inclusive. It is intended to identify the major responsibilities and requirements of this position. The incumbents may be requested to perform job-related responsibilities and tasks other than those stated in this position description.

  1. Inspects, tests, adjusts, and repairs all physical plant machinery, heating, cooling, piping, and electrical systems, and records maintenance in accordance with schedules.
  2. Troubleshoots and repairs minor mechanical malfunctions and performs preventative maintenance on vehicles, dishwashers, laundry machines, vent fans, etc.; performs minor adjustments; lubricates and cleans vehicles and/or equipment.
  3. Constructs and repairs building structures, walls, floors, ceilings, cabinets, and furniture.
  4. Performs minor repairs to air conditioning system as required and ensures general maintenance of system.
  5. Performs skilled maintenance activities including construction, welding, brazing, soldering, and minor plumbing. Installs electrical conduit, wiring, switching devices, controls, outlets, fixtures, motors, and other such equipment.
  6. Repairs light fixtures, fluorescent tubes, spot lights, exit lights, and other minor lighting malfunctions.
  7. Checks and repairs pumps, fans, valves, and motors.
  8. Performs various groundskeeping work; mows grass, trims trees, prunes hedges, edges lawn, etc. May drive Salvation Army vehicle to pick-up and/or deliver miscellaneous items or to transport passengers.
  9. Maintains tools and machinery in good condition and uses all tools carefully and as instructed. Prepares accurate records for preventive maintenance.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Opens/closes building as scheduled; raises and lowers all flags daily; displays special signs as needed.
  2. Cleans carpets and upholstered furniture with power extractor.
  3. Performs other related work as required.
MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Hand saw, Planer, Joiner, Shaper Table saw, Wood lathe, Drill press, Sanding Machine, Router, Electric drill, Hammer, Screw Drivers, Wire Cutters and Ladder Gauges.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Two years course work from a technical or vocational school in construction, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning as well as plumbing and electronics, and three years experience performing maintenance and repair work for commercial building and grounds, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

Valid State Drivers License.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  1. Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and practices used in at least two of the building, electrical, or mechanical trades.
  2. Knowledge of plumbing, electrical, construction, and air conditioning equipment.
  3. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trades involved.
  4. Skill in the care and use of tools and equipment used in the trades involved.
  5. Ability to detect defects in equipment and to make proper repairs or adjustments.
  6. Ability to follow instructions and work with little or no supervision.
MENTAL AND PHYSICAL ABILITIES
  1. Ability to meet attendance requirements.
  2. Ability to read, write, and communicate in the English language.
  3. Ability to perform heavy lifting.
  4. Ability to perform strenuous, heavy work involving the lifting and carrying of heavy objects.
  5. Ability to perform continuous walking, stooping, standing, and some climbing.
WORKING CONDITIONS

Work requires driving a vehicle and working outdoors daily with exposure to physical discomforts associated with changes in weather such as rain, cold, snow, heat or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like.
