Building Maintenance: Maintenance Worker

Incumbent serves as Maintenance Worker for the Vigo County Building Maintenance, responsible for daily maintenance of building, grounds and related equipment.

Examples of Duties

  • Performs maintenance and preventative maintenance duties.
  • Runs electrical wiring, repairs broken electrical equipment and wiring.
  • Maintains plumbing. Makes building and furnishing repairs, and maintains heating and air condition systems.
  • Repairs, maintains, and services equipment, machinery and tools.
  • Performs painting duties as necessary.
  • Changes light bulbs, as needed.
  • Moves furniture and equipment, and performs basic office machine repairs.
  • Maintains grounds, including snow removal, cutting grass and picking up trash. Cleans assigned areas.
  • Operates welder in performance of duties. Assists co-workers as needed
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED supplemented by some previous relevant work experience, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Ability to meet all employer and department hiring requirements, including passage of a drug test.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Working knowledge of and ability to utilize various equipment, tools, and chemicals, including lawn mowers, tractors, mechanical tools, electrical tools, carpentry tools, various hand/power tools, snow plow, and cleaning equipment/supplies.
  • Knowledge of and ability to comprehend a variety of reference books and manuals, including equipment manuals, chemicals instructions, personnel policy, blueprints, and electrical diagrams.
  • Knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling and punctuation, and ability to prepare job related documents.
  • Ability to learn and understand maintenance, electrical, and mechanical terminology, language, principles, and techniques.
  • Ability to exert physical effort in moderate to occasional heavy work, involving lifting/carrying, pushing/pulling, stooping/crouching and crawling, climbing and balancing and tasks required for visual perception and discrimination.
  • Ability to comply with all employer and department polices and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.
  • Ability to provide public access to or maintain confidentiality of department records and information according to state requirements.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities and disabilities.
  • Ability to understand, memorize, retain and carry out written or oral instructions and present findings in oral or written form.
  • Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment.
  • Ability to work on several tasks at the same time and work rapidly for long periods, often under time pressure.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of people and/or locations, and plan and layout assigned work projects.
  • Ability perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, and ability to perceive and discriminate colors, odors, and shapes.
  • Ability to operate welder in performance of duties. Ability to respond immediately to crisis situations.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and a demonstrated safe driving record.
Supplemental Information

Incumbent performs various building and grounds maintenance duties according to standard department policies and procedures. Incumbent uses some independent judgment and takes necessary action to ensure proper care and upkeep of County facilities, and compliance with pertinent regulations. Incumbent receives general instructions and/or guidance from Supervisor and performs majority of duties under minimal supervision.

Incumbent reports directly to Maintenance Director.

Incumbent performs duties which involve moderate physical effort, involving sitting/walking at will, standing/walking for long periods, lifting/carrying objects weighing 25-50 pounds, pushing/pulling objects, crouching/kneeling, color/depth perception, close/far vision, bending, reaching, driving, hearing sounds/communication, and handling, grasping, and fingering objects.

Incumbent performs duties both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions, and is exposed to the normal hazards associated with various trades and buildings and grounds maintenance operations, such as climbing ladders, working near chemical, fumes, odors, dust, and dirt, working in a noisy environment, and in confined areas. Safety precautions must be used at all times to avoid injury to self and others.
