City of Amarillo seeks an inspector to perform inspections on residential and commercial properties to ensure compliance with municipal codes. The role involves reviewing construction documents, issuing permits, and guiding the public on applicable requirements.
The position emphasizes collaboration with other agencies, handling violations, and potential testimony in Municipal Court; bilingual Spanish is preferred and a Texas driver’s license is required.
Starting Pay $17.865/hr.
Under supervision, this position performs a variety of inspections of building and properties to ensure compliance with City of Amarillo Municipal Code, which may include mechanical, electrical, irrigation, complaints, violations, substandard structures, and mobile homes. Assists other inspectors, as needed, in enforcement of other ordinances. Answers technical questions both in person and on the phone. Reviews construction documents for compliance with all applicable codes. No supervision of others.
Performs inspections on residential and commercial buildings, mobile homes and signs, investigating complaints to ensure compliance to the City of Amarillo's Municipal Code. Performs field inspections for compliance with City Ordinances as needed. Reviews construction documents to verify compliance with applicable City Ordinances and issuance of permits. Provides information to the public regarding the requirements and policies of the City. Coordinate with other agencies and contractors, monitoring condemnation and demolition process. Provides documentation of inspections, research property and inspection history utilizing necessary software and equipment. Collaborates with the other inspectors, departments, agencies as required to ensure compliance with codes. Investigates, interprets, and issues violation notices as necessary. May be required to file suits, prepare cases, and testify in Municipal Court. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Normal work hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. May be subject to afterhours and weekend inspections. The employee works in a dynamic environment, spending part of their time working in an environment where errors on their part can lead to significant physical or mental consequences for them or others. Also requires being sensitive to change and responsive to changing goals, priorities, and needs.
