Job summary

The City of Amarillo is seeking a qualified individual to supervise and direct the maintenance of city parks, athletic fields, and facilities. You will manage crews, coordinate irrigation and turf care, and interact with contractors and the public to ensure high standards.

Under the Park Superintendent and Assistant, you will plan work, hire staff, develop safety training, and contribute to budgets, reporting, and program development for a thriving civic landscape.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture or related field with two years of progressive experience in irrigation and landscape maintenance.
  • Ability to supervise diverse staff and coordinate park maintenance activities.
  • Must have valid Texas driver’s license and pesticide/inspection-related credentials.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, supervises, and coordinates operation and maintenance of city parks and recreational areas.
  • Plan, assign, and coordinate work of crews maintaining park facilities.
  • Interview, hire, and evaluate subordinate employees.
  • Supervise turf maintenance, irrigation, fertilization, weed control, and maintenance of playgrounds and athletic fields.
  • Assist in developing work standards and inspecting work in progress.
  • Assist in preparing department maintenance budget and programs, including safety training.
  • Engage with civic groups and coordinate volunteer efforts.
  • Prepare reports for management and respond to citizen questions and complaints.
  • Direct, inspect, and communicate with contractors.

Job description

Starting Pay: $19.696/hr.

Summary Under direction of the Park Superintendent and Assistant, this position is responsible for performing technical, administrative and supervisory work directing the activities of workers engaged in a wide variety of park grounds, athletic field and facility maintenance; exercises general supervision over supervisory, semi technical, skilled and unskilled personnel.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Plans, supervises, and coordinates the operation and maintenance of city parks and recreational areas.
  • Plan, assign, and coordinate the work of crews engaged in maintaining park facilities.
  • Interview, hire, and evaluate subordinate employees.
  • Supervise activities such as turf maintenance, irrigation, fertilization, weed control, and maintenance of playgrounds and athletic fields.
  • Assist in developing work standards and inspect work in progress.
  • Assist in preparing department maintenance budget; programs;
  • Assist in development and presentation of safety training and other training Order necessary tools, equipment, and materials;
  • Meet with civic groups and coordinate volunteer efforts.
  • Prepare reports for management.
  • Answer citizen questions and complaints.
  • Direct, inspect, and communicate with contractors.
  • Perform related duties as directed.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Considerable knowledge of equipment and tools used in maintenance and care of park grounds, athletic fields, trees, flower beds, irrigation, lighting, plumbing, building maintenance and related structural items.
  • Ability to operate tractors, trucks, power and hand tools, shop equipment, irrigation controllers.
  • Ability to operate and repair small/light equipment, such as power tools.
  • Ability to operate and repair medium equipment and machinery, such as vehicles or commercial mowers.
  • Ability to operate and repair heavy or complex machinery, such as HVAC systems, construction equipment.
  • Ability to supervise employees using or repairing heavy or complex machinery.
  • Ability to supervise employees developing, installing, or repairing technology systems.
  • Ability to operate computers for data entry and word processing.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skill.
  • Ability to operate small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems.
Licenses/Certification Required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture or related field; AND two (2) years of progressively responsible work in the installation, irrigation, and landscape maintenance; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License required.
  • Must obtain TDA Pesticide Applicator License within first 6 months of employment.
  • Certified Playground Safety Inspector, Texas Irrigation Technician License, and Certified Pool Operator, preferred.
