Job summary

County of Hawai`i is seeking a full-time Building Inspector in Kailua-Kona to inspect and enforce building and zoning codes across multi‑storied buildings and structures. You will verify plans, materials, and methods, ensuring compliance with approved specifications and safety standards.

The role requires high school graduation and 4 years in building construction inspection, including 2 years in code enforcement, plus a valid Hawaiʻi driver’s license.

Qualifications

• Graduation from high school;
• Four (4) years of experience in inspecting or supervising building construction;
• Two (2) years in building code enforcement work (regulatory agency);
• Possession of a valid State of Hawaiʻi driver's license (Class 3) at time of filing.

Responsibilities

• Inspect construction, alteration, and maintenance of buildings and structures for compliance with building and zoning codes and approved plans.
• Check size/quality of materials and methods of construction for walls, floors, roofs, foundations, and more.
• Inspect swimming pools and bleachers for safety.
• Identify hazardous conditions and needed repairs.
• Investigate complaints about dangerous conditions or illegal alterations.
• Issue stop-work orders when necessary.
• Maintain records, schedules, and prepare reports.
• May review building permit applications and provide information on building laws.
