Job summary

Hensel Phelps is seeking a Building Engineer to oversee timely maintenance activities and manage our maintenance team. You will perform preventive maintenance on critical building systems and ensure safe, efficient operation of electrical, HVAC, boilers, pumps, and related infrastructure.

The role requires hands‑on mechanical skills, ability to read blueprints/CAD drawings, and strong communication to coordinate with clients and internal teams.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED is required.
• 1+ years’ experience in commercial/industrial building operations.
• Familiarity with HVAC, safety procedures, and basic tools.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential.
• Ability to read blueprints or CAD drawings and supervise tasks.

Job Description

The Building Engineer will be responsible for the timely completion of necessary maintenance activities and the management of the maintenance team.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform predictive and preventative maintenance on facility equipment and mechanical and building systems, including electrical, HVAC, boilers, pumps, motors, valves and chilled water/heating hot water distribution systems including chillers and cooling towers, filter changes, belt changes, equipment cleaning and equipment painting
• Assist with ancillary building systems necessary to keep systems operating at peak performance with minimal downtime
• Perform routine maintenance tasks including inspection of buildings, grounds, and equipment for unsafe or malfunctioning conditions
• Troubleshoot, evaluate, and recommend upgrades to ensure building is compliant and up-to code
• Order parts and supplies for maintenance repairs
• Monitor and respond to service requests in work order management system
• Demonstrate exceptional customer service skills and maintain positive and professional working relationship with internal and external clients through timely and professional communication.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED)
• 1+ years’ experience in commercial or industrial environment with increasing responsibility for managing daily building operations
• General mechanical and carpentry skills
• Experience with HVAC system maintenance
• Knowledge of safety procedures and equipment
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Basic computer skills such as internet, email, electronic manual, etc
• Ab Highly organized and able to prioritize tasks as needed
• Preferred Qualifications: Thorough understanding of air conditioning and control systems
• Working knowledge of mechanical, electrical and life safety monitoring and control systems
• Management/supervisory experience
• Ability to read blueprints/CAD drawings
• Prior work experience in a commercial setting.

Physical Requirements

Heavy Work. Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

• The individual in this position will periodically walk, kneel, sit, crouch, reach, stoop, read/see, speak, push, pull, lift, stand, and finger/type. The frequency of each action varies by workflow and office activity.
• Walking - The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, boxes, cabinets, etc.
• Constantly operates a computer and other office machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, phone, computer, and computer printer.
• The person in this position frequently communicates with employees and external stakeholders regarding a variety of topics related to office administration.
• Constantly computes, analyzes, and conceptualizes mathematical calculations and formulas.
• The person in this position regularly sits in a stationary position in front of a computer screen.
• Constantly reads written communications and views mail submissions. Will also need to read blueprints and take/verify field measurements.
• Climbing – Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding and ramps at various heights.
• Balancing – Ability to maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling and to walk, stand or crouch.
• Stooping – Bending the body downward and forward by the spine at the waist.
• Visual acuity and ability to operate a vehicle as certified and appropriate.
• Occasionally exposed to high and low temperatures.
• Frequently exposed to noisy environments and outdoor elements such as precipitation and wind.
