Schedule: 6:00am – 2:30pm shifts, some weekends (additional $2.00/hour), some holidays, 1st shift.
Summary:
Building Cleaning Workers I – Perform independent cleaning, custodial or janitorial duties associated with the care, cleaning and maintenance of multiple buildings/facilities for the State of New Hampshire Veterans Home; may include assignment to multiple units, areas, locations.
Building Cleaning Workers II – Serve as a team or crew lead, and/or shift point person and independently provide a full range of cleaning, custodial or janitorial duties associated with the care, cleaning, and maintenance of one or multiple state facilities, buildings, grounds or institutions; may include assignment to multiple units, areas, locations or districts.
YOUR EXPERIENCE COUNTS: Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience and/or each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.
Minimum Qualifications (Level I): 8th grade education; no license or certification required.
Preferred Qualifications (Level I):
- Knowledge of the methods and practices of cleaning services in a large complex, health facility, or building
- Knowledge of the principles and processes for providing customer and personal services
- Knowledge of quality standards for health, environment and safety
- Ability to read and write and to prepare both written and oral reports
- Ability to listen and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences
- Ability to arrange things or actions in a certain order or pattern according to a specific rule or set of rules (e.g., patterns of numbers, letters, words, pictures, mathematical operations)
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
- Ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong
- Must be willing to maintain appearance appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the agency appointing authority

- Must have completed at least six months (full-time) or one year (part-time) of employment as a Building Cleaning Worker I
- Must receive a satisfactory performance evaluation
- Must be approved for promotion at the discretion of agency management to satisfy organizational/business needs
- Must receive a recommendation for promotion to Building Cleaning Worker II by the immediate supervisor
Responsibilities (Level I):
- Perform light to heavy physical all-inclusive housekeeping, floor care and custodial activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and whole body movement such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, or handling equipment and materials to perform cleaning duties.
- Dust, vacuum, strip/buff/wax, polish floors, shampoo rugs, wash walls and glass, and disinfect.
- Remove snow, debris, or garbage from grounds/walkways; salt and sand when needed.
- Move furniture, equipment, and resident belongings as necessary to facilitate resident moves, new admissions, and discharges; include packing, inventorying and storing of such belongings securely in designated areas adhering to written procedures.
- Use mechanical equipment such as disinfectant robots, floor care equipment, or wheelchair washer machines; perform condition checks, replace or request repairs as needed; observe operation of building or facility's mechanical, safety, or environmental systems and notify supervisor or team lead of any issues or concerns.
- Apply best practices for Infection Control instructed by supervisor and standards of cleanliness to meet VA Environmental Service Standards when cleaning resident rooms, furniture, and equipment as well as common areas in the facility.
- Apply appropriate solvents, chemicals, and disinfectants; remove contaminated and non-contaminated waste from buildings/facilities; dispose of waste in a prescribed manner; adhere to Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) health and safety requirements relevant to the work area or facility.
- Stock supplies and advise team lead or supervisor when inventory is low or supplies are needed.
- Collaborate with and assist other disciplines to provide a clean, safe environment for residents.
Responsibilities (Level II):
- Lead and mentor individuals or crews and ensure that cleaning, shift details, and projects are completed on schedule; inspect and review work of team members to ensure quality and that health and safety standards are being followed; recommend personnel actions or changes to standard operational procedures to supervisor.

- Interact with building or facility employees, residents, patients, or contractors; investigate complaints about cleanliness, service or equipment issues and take corrective actions on-site.
- Respond to immediate safety and/or maintenance concerns; refer escalated issues for resolution to supervisor.
- Complete daily activity reports, logs, or notes as necessary.
- Inventory stock to ensure supplies and equipment are available in adequate amounts and order or advise supervisor of what is needed.
- Apply best practices for Infection Control instructed by supervisor and standards of cleanliness to meet VA Environmental Service Standards when cleaning resident rooms, furniture, and equipment as well as common areas in the facility.
