Job description

About the role

We are looking for an experienced BS/MD College Admissions Counselors to guide ambitious high school students pursuing highly selective colleges and combined medical programs.

Our ideal counselor has significant college admissions counseling experience and/or experience as a former admissions officer at a highly selective university. We strongly prefer counselors who graduated from a top 50 university and bring a strong STEM background, particularly in medicine, pre-med, engineering, computer science, or related fields.

Many of our students are high-achieving students applying to top 50 universities, including the University of California campuses and Ivy League institutions. A significant portion of our students are aspiring physicians pursuing competitive BS/MD and pre-med pathways, making firsthand knowledge of STEM-focused admissions, medical extracurricular development, and BS/MD programs especially valuable.

As a BS/MD College Admissions Counselor, you will work closely with students and families to build thoughtful, individualized admissions strategies. This includes developing academic and extracurricular roadmaps, identifying meaningful research, clinical, volunteer, and leadership opportunities, building balanced college and BS/MD program lists, and providing structure and strategic feedback throughout the application process.

Beyond admissions, our counselors help students discover their interests, develop authentic passions, and make intentional decisions about their academic and early career paths.

This is a part-time opportunity with weekly hours based on counselor availability and student needs.

Responsibilities
  • Stay current on college admissions trends and requirements, particularly for top 50 universities, BS/MD programs, and STEM-focused applicants.
  • Manage a caseload of approximately 20-25 students based on availability and bandwidth.
  • Develop individualized academic and extracurricular roadmaps aligned with students’ college and career goals.
  • Advise students on meaningful extracurriculars, leadership opportunities, research, clinical experiences, internships, competitions, community service, and summer programs.
  • Create standardized testing strategies and develop balanced college lists, including reach, target, and likely schools.
  • Guide students through the full application process, including personal statements, supplemental essays, activities, resumes, recommendations, and final application review.
  • Provide BS/MD-specific guidance, including program selection, medical-focused extracurricular development, supplemental essays, and interview preparation.
  • Develop application strategies across Early Action, Early Decision, Regular Decision, waitlists, and final college selection.
  • Maintain consistent communication with students and families, prepare for sessions, document progress, and meet application deadlines.
  • Attend team meetings and utilize Empowerly’s resources, email, and Slack to stay connected and provide students with comprehensive support.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Experience working with BS/MD applicants and 5+ acceptances.
  • Bachelor’s degree from a top 50 national university. Advanced degrees such as an MD, PhD, MBA, JD, or master’s degree are a plus.
  • College counseling experience with a track record of helping students gain admission to top 50 universities.
  • Experience advising students interested in BS/MD, pre-med, STEM, healthcare, or other highly competitive academic pathways.
  • Strong knowledge of selective college admissions, application strategy, and extracurricular development.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and communication skills.
  • Strong organization, time management, and commitment to student and family service.
  • Consistent availability after 3:00 p.m. and/or on weekends.
  • Ability to support students enrolled in multi-year counseling packages.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Former admissions officer at a top 50 university.
  • Demonstrated success counseling students applying to BS/MD programs, Ivy League institutions, top 20 universities, and/or highly selective STEM programs.
  • Academic or professional background in medicine, healthcare, biology, engineering, computer science, or another STEM field.
  • Advanced degree such as an MD, PhD, or master’s degree in a relevant field.
  • Experienced independent college counselor with involvement in NACAC, WACAC, IECA, or similar professional organizations.
