Job summary

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) seeks a skilled welder to join the structural welding crew responsible for fabricating, installing, and repairing steel bridge components in Baton Rouge.

The role involves aluminum and stainless-steel welding, inspection, repair, preheating, grinding, brazing, and related welding techniques, with supervision of other welders and apprentices. Appointment is probationary or detail-based, with state pay and benefits.

Qualifications

• Three years of experience or training in the welding trade.
• Completion of a Technical Diploma or Associate of Applied Science welding program from a Louisiana Technical or Community College or equivalent program plus one year of experience or training in the welding trade.

Responsibilities

• Performs specialized aluminum and stainless-steel welding, fabrication, and design work, including fixed and movable bridge components.
• Inspects, prepares, repairs, and welds metal components; performs preheating, grinding, brazing, and other welding techniques while following applicable safety and welding standards.
• Provides functional supervision and training to other welders and trades apprentices, including Mobile Equipment Operators and Trades Apprentices.
• Makes minor equipment repairs and adjustments, operates heavy trucks/equipment as needed, and maintains tools and equipment in good working condition.

Education

Technical Diploma or AS in Welding (Louisiana Tech/Community College) or equivalent + 1 year welding experience
