Job summary

Virginia Department of Transportation is seeking skilled construction workers to repair, maintain and replace bridges and structures in accordance with safety standards and VDOT procedures. The role includes carpentry, welding, concrete finishing, and installing structural components on bridges and other structures.

The position requires operating light to medium-duty highway equipment, performing preventative maintenance, and adhering to safety regulations.

Qualifications

• Proven ability in carpentry, concrete forming and finishing.
• Experience fabricating or welding steel components.
• Experience with light to medium-duty equipment and hand/power tools.
• Ability to operate and use equipment safely.
• Ability to read and follow instructions.
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
• Knowledge of highway and bridge maintenance methods and safety practices.

Responsibilities

• Perform skilled carpentry, welding and concrete finishing; remove/install structural components.
• Place temporary bridges and remove damaged structures; operate equipment for snow/ice removal and emergencies; provide traffic control.
• Apply environmental protection measures during maintenance and construction activities.
• Operate light and medium-duty highway equipment for maintenance tasks.
• Maintain safe work environment; follow OSHA/VDOT safety regulations; use MUTCD detours and work zones.
• Participate as a working crew member for bridge elements and other structures.
• Perform preventative maintenance on equipment and tools; complete pre-trip inspections.
