Job summary

NV5’s Morristown, NJ office seeks an experienced Assistant Bridge Engineer to contribute to diverse public and private infrastructure projects for State and County agencies. The role involves mentoring junior staff, leading bridge design efforts, and ensuring compliance with standards.

The team employs a four-day work week in New Jersey, with opportunities to lead structural analysis, prepare plans and estimates, and advance professional credentials.

Qualifications

• EIT required.
• PE license preferred or ability to obtain within 1 year after starting.
• 4–8 years of experience as a bridge engineer, including design, plan preparation, structural analysis, design, quantity calculation, and construction support services.
• Proficiency with AASHTO LRFD, MicroStation (ORD a plus)/InRoads, and structural design software (LARS, STAAD, LEAP, etc.)
• Experience with NJDOT, NJTA, and PANYNJ projects
• Strong communication, organizational, and team leadership skills
• Ability to independently and accurately complete engineering calculations for reinforced and prestressed concrete and steel structures; familiarity with timber and masonry design is a plus.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office software applications (including MS Project).
• Must possess or be able to obtain a valid driver’s license prior to employment

Responsibilities

• Lead and mentor junior staff (1+ engineers) on technical design and project tasks
• Lead the planning, administration, and design of structural bridge projects, ensuring compliance with state and federal standards.
• Conduct detailed structural analysis and design for various bridge projects.
• Develop and review engineering calculations for reinforced and prestressed concrete, steel structures, and other materials.
• Prepare comprehensive engineering reports, plans, specifications, and estimates.
• Utilize engineering software packages such as STAAD, PennDOT ABLRFD, L-Pile, and MathCAD for project delivery.
• Ensure timely delivery of PS&E contract documents, coordinating with multidisciplinary teams across various geographic locations.
• Conduct quality control and assurance activities to maintain high standards in project execution.
• Develop quantities and cost estimates, ensuring projects stay within budget.
• Utilize CADD to develop detailed bridge plans and specifications.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry standards, code requirements, and client objectives.
• Conduct/lead field work oversight, including surveys, data collection, construction observation, and support (RFIs, submittals, change orders)
