Job summary

MoDOT is seeking a bridge location and layout designer responsible for preliminary design and final layouts for highway structures, including bridges, culverts, and retaining walls. The role involves hydraulic analyses, cost estimating, and ensuring compliance with state and federal guidelines, under general supervision.

The position requires a civil/structural engineering degree, Engineer-in-Training certification, and at least five years of relevant experience.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in civil or structural engineering from ABET-accredited program.
• Engineer-in-Training exam completed.
• Five years of civil engineering experience with proficiency in structural or highway design.
• Advanced degree may substitute up to two years of experience.

Responsibilities

• Perform independent hydraulic and hydrologic analyses for stream crossing structures and grade separation designs.
• Evaluate alternatives and prepare cost estimates for the most practical design.
• Prepare bridge memorandums for new or rehabilitated structures and internal agreements.
• Liaise with department personnel, agencies, consultants, and suppliers to gather data and secure permits.
• Coordinate and review valley data, surveys, and soundings with division and district personnel.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in civil or structural engineering

Engineer-in-Training exam

Five years of civil engineering experience

Advanced degree in civil engineering (hydrology/hydraulics or soil mechanics) substitution
