Job summary

Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson, Inc. seeks an undergraduate intern to support the bridge inspection and design department and gain practical, hands-on experience in project design and documentation.

You will assist with research, simple studies, and layout tasks, and participate in field inspections of in-service structures, while preparing drawings and construction phase records under supervision. This internship offers exposure to a multi-disciplinary team in an employee-owned firm.

Qualifications

• High school graduate or currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in a related field.
• Full-time student currently pursuing an ABET accredited undergraduate degree in civil engineering with an interest in bridge or transportation structures.
• Familiarity with design and production software, with the ability to use these tools to develop project documents and collaborate with project team members.
• Coursework in a related field.
• Previous internship or relevant work experience.

Responsibilities

• Assist senior or lead with basic design tasks, including research, simple studies, and layout support.
• Assist with field inspections of in-service structures and related documentation.
• Help prepare drawings and documents for programming, schematic design, modeling, graphics, design development, and construction phases.
• Support the creation of presentation and marketing materials.
• Assist with construction phase activities, including participating in site visits, supporting RFI responses, reviewing shop drawings, and helping update record drawings.
• Follow established quality control procedures and ask questions as needed.
• Learn and apply department and company standards and best practices.
• Develop basic design, analysis, and technical skills through hands-on experience.
• Participate in team meetings and collaborate with team members.
• Receive guidance and direction from supervisors and team leaders.
• Collaborate with architects, engineers, interior designers, and other multidisciplinary team members
