Job summary

South Carolina Department of Transportation in the United States is seeking a Highway Maintenance Worker to perform bridge repair and roadway maintenance across the state highway system, including grading, mowing, and concrete work.

You will operate heavy and medium equipment, set up traffic control, support emergency weather operations, and be available for extended shifts; a valid CDL must be obtained within six months, and you must lift up to 50 lbs.

Qualifications

• One year of related work experience.
• A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
• Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six months of placement.

Responsibilities

• Performs general highway maintenance worker functions and operates heavy equipment including backhoe, mini excavator, and lowboy truck tractor and trailer to repair bridge deficiencies.
• Operates medium equipment such as a skid steer and tandem dump truck in bridge construction, repair, and preservation.
• Performs bridge maintenance activities using tools like saws, hoists, power tools, measuring devices, and welders.
• Places traffic control devices to set up a maintenance work zone per SCDOT guidelines.
• Supports emergency and inclement weather operations; may work extended hours or 12-hour shifts.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
