Job summary

YMCA of Kenosha is seeking an enthusiastic tutor to support afterschool sessions, and occasional school-day hours, for students in grades K-8. You will create lessons, reinforce math and reading skills, and help students develop study strategies in a supportive, asset-based setting.

Work with classroom teachers and Achievers site staff, track daily progress, and model positive behavior while upholding YMCA policies.

Qualifications

  • Must be 15 years or older and meet academic standards for tutoring.
  • Understand how schools operate and age-appropriate curriculum.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Create lessons to improve understanding of math and reading for grades K-8.
  • Teach study skills and strategies to support academic success.
  • Identify students needing help and provide targeted support.
  • Prepare sessions with teachers and Achievers site staff.
  • Document daily progress and maintain academic records.
  • Model professionalism and adhere to YMCA policies.
  • Attend staff development sessions to improve effectiveness.

Job description

BE A PART OF SOMETHING GREATThis position supports the work of the YMCA, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Provides academic tutoring in math and/or reading for children in grades K-8. Instruction and activities are designed expressly to promote subject mastery, develop grade-level competencies and to teach study skills. Tutoring services are provided during the afterschool time at the signature program school location and in addition during school day hours as needed.Job ResponsibilitiesCreate lessons that help students achieve a better understanding of specific subject material and in improving academic capabilities in designated areas.Teach students strategies that develop the study skills necessary for academic success.Identify students experiencing difficulties and provide encouragement and alternatives.Provide academic assistance to assigned students, individually or in a small group setting.Work with students’ classroom teacher/Achievers site staff and direct supervisor in preparing for tutoring sessions, reviewing class material, discussing the text, predicting test questions, formulating ideas for materials, or working on solutions to problems.Utilize the resources of the school and after-school program in order to assist the student(s) in education endeavors.Attend staff development sessions/meetings to increase competency in working with students.Document, track and maintain daily progress and academic records of assigned students. Provide feedback regarding student’s progress as well as behavior.Acknowledge student efforts, accomplishments and progress.Integrate an asset based positive youth development approach in the tutoring sessions.Assist students in developing self-confidence, raising self-concept, and reducing anxiety or fear of failure in academic work.Work with students to develop a high level of motivation in academic areas and positive attitudes toward learning and studying.Serve as a role model for students being served.Adhere to all processes, procedures, rules and regulations of the YMCA, the afterschool program, and School District.Supervises achievers’ students.Qualified individual, 15 years or older, who meets academic standards for tutoring and demonstrate competence in analyzing student’s academic needs and effectively provide solutions and support in assisting the student to reach their academic potential.High School Graduate or GED (college degree and certified teacher preferred) OR upon recommendation by Highschool Faculty if pending graduationMust possess an understanding and knowledge of how schools operate as well as specific knowledge in age-appropriate curriculum.Must demonstrate good verbal and written communications skills.Possess good organization and problem solving skills.Be dependable and supportive of the program.Required to keep First Aid, CPR, and AED Certificate CurrentEmployee Benefits Include:Free FAMILY MembershipFlexible Work ScheduleA Team AtmosphereDiscount on Y ProgramsDiscount on Child CareThe Young Achievers Teacher understands the Kenosha YMCA has zero tolerance for abuse of youth in its programs by employees or volunteers and will follow child abuse prevention policies, comply with mandated reporting requirements, and cooperate with law enforcement.
