Job summary

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) seeks Border Patrol Agents (BPAs) to join a federal law enforcement team. The agency protects the United States by preventing threats at the border while facilitating lawful travel and trade.

Positions range from entry to mid-level, with career potential and robust benefits. Selected BPAs earn base pay within the GL/GS scales and may receive recruitment incentives up to $20,000 plus retention incentives up to $30,000.

Qualifications

• Experience in general work settings demonstrating ability to take charge, make sound decisions, and remain calm under stress.
• Educational substitutions: a bachelor’s degree or completion of a four-year course leading to a bachelor’s degree may qualify.
• Combination of experience and education may be evaluated from resumes and transcripts.

Responsibilities

• Detecting and questioning people suspected of violating immigration and customs laws.
• Inspecting documents and possessions to determine citizenship or violations.
• Preventing and apprehending undocumented noncitizens and smugglers.
• Interpreting tracks, marks and other evidence of illegal entry.
• Performing farm, building, traffic and transportation checks; patrolling borders and waterways.
