Job summary

Customs and Border Protection Officer (CBPO) roles protect borders, enforce laws, and support lawful trade and travel. This is a career with a formal grade progression from GS-5 through GS-12 and required training at FLETC, plus relocation options based on mission needs.

Incentives exist for certain duty locations, with up to $15,000 per year for three- or four-year contracts, and comprehensive benefits including health and dental insurance, a Thrift Savings Plan, annual leave, and overtime

Qualifications

• Experience: A minimum of one year of specialized experience at the next lower grade level, including detaining violators and enforcing import/export laws.
• Education Substitution: A master's degree or higher, or two or more years of graduate education, or an LL.B./J.D.
• Combination of Experience and Education: A mix of specialized experience and graduate-level education.
• Citizenship: You must be a U.S. citizen to apply.
• Residency: Primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years.
• Age Restriction: DHS age rules apply; reference to retirement provisions.
• Veterans’ Preference: VRA eligibility may apply.
• Formal Training: Paid pre-academy orientation ~2 weeks and CBP Field Operations Academy (101 days) at FLETC; Spanish training for southern border/Miami/Puerto Rico duty locations.

Responsibilities

• Enforcing customs, immigration, and agriculture laws and regulations.
• Conducting inspections of individuals and conveyances.
• Determining admissibility of individuals for entry into the United States.
• Detaining violators and enforcing laws related to importing/exporting goods.
• Protecting national security through risk assessments and investigations.
