Job summary

The New York City Department of Transportation, Division of Bridges, is seeking a Supervisor Carpenter to lead carpentry crews on bridge projects and to ensure quality and safety compliance. You will interpret blueprints, plan and review work, and coordinate with project managers and other trades.

Applicants must have seven years of carpentry experience with at least two years in supervisory roles and a NY driver’s license is preferred.

Qualifications

  • Seven (7) years of recent, satisfactory, full time, paid experience as a carpenter, at least two (2) years of which must have been spent in duties of a supervisory nature; or a satisfactory equivalent.
  • Preference will be given to candidate who possess a driver's license valid in the State of New York with no restrictions. Employees must maintain the license during their employment in this position.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and coordinate daily activities of carpenters and other assigned personnel.
  • Plan, assign and review work to ensure it meets project specifications and quality standards.
  • Interpret blueprints, drawings, and project documents to guide carpentry tasks.
  • Ensure proper use and maintenance of carpentry tools, equipment, and materials.
  • Monitor work progress and make adjustments to schedules as needed.
  • Inspect completed work to ensure compliance with safety standards and building codes.
  • Train, mentoring, and providing technical guidance to carpenters.
  • Enforce safety protocols and promote a safe work environment.
  • Communicate with project managers, contractors, and other trades to coordinate activities.
  • Assist with material procurement and inventory management for carpentry needs.

The New York City Department of Transportation, Division of Bridges is responsible for managing the full life cycle of over 800 bridges and tunnels and over 600 retaining walls, ensuring safety of the public and ensuring mobility for all users. Team members may work on major project designs, oversee construction, oversee maintenance activities, perform engineering reviews and quality assurance tasks on some of the most iconic and complex projects in the City.
