Job summary

The New York City Department of Transportation, Division of Bridges, is looking for a skilled Carpenter to maintain and repair elevated infrastructure in Brooklyn, Manhattan and beyond. You will read plans, perform rough and finish carpentry, and operate woodworking tools to support bridge projects.

Expect to work from 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM, with potential evenings or weekends. Residency within NYC is generally required; a NY driver’s license is preferred.

Qualifications

• Five years of full-time carpentry experience within the last ten years, or three years plus relevant vocational training.
• Ability to read plans and sketches and perform rough, finish and general carpentry tasks.
• Willingness to work at heights and in confined spaces; may require evenings or weekends.

The New York City Department of Transportation, Division of Bridges is responsible for managing the full life cycle of over 800 bridges and tunnels and over 600 retaining walls, ensuring safety of the public and ensuring mobility for all users. Team members may work on major project designs, oversee construction, oversee maintenance activities, perform engineering reviews and quality assurance tasks on some of the most iconic and complex projects in the City.

Performs installation and repair work involving rough, finish, and general carpentry related to the maintenance of the city's elevated infrastructure; builds and repairs toolboxes and various types of ladders and other equipment; works from plans and sketches; operates both hand and powered woodworking equipment; keeps job records; performs related duties. Some duties may require working at heights and in confined spaces. May be occasionally required to work evenings and weekends.

Minimum Qualifications

• 1. Five years of full-time satisfactory experience as a Carpenter acquired within the last 10 years; or
• 2. Three years of experience as described in '1' above, plus sufficient training of a relevant nature acquired in an approved trade or vocational high school to make up a total of five years of acceptable experience. Six months of acceptable experience will be credited for each year of approved trade or vocational school training.

Preferred Skills

Possession of a driver's license valid in the State of New York with no restrictions. Employees must maintain the license during their employment.
