Job description

Background

Bloomberg Philanthropies works to create catalytic change across five areas of focus: arts and culture, education, the environment, government innovation, and public health. Our mission is to ensure better, longer lives for the greatest number of people. Our approach is rooted in Mike Bloomberg's unique experience and success across the field of business, government, and philanthropy.

Bloomberg Associates (BA)

BA is Bloomberg Philanthropies' pro bono consulting service founded by Michael R. Bloomberg, the 108th Mayor of New York City and Founder of Bloomberg LP, as a philanthropic venture. We provide services to cities that help governments improve the quality of life of their citizens. BA works across nine (9) different focus areas: Cultural Assets Management, Marketing & Communications, Media and Digital Strategies, Municipal Integrity, Social Services, Sustainability, Transportation, Economic Development and Urban Planning, with teams that have deep subject matter expertise and extensive experience in municipal government.

The Position

Bloomberg Associates seeks a Fellow for six months with possibility to extend to assist the Operations Practice in the maintenance and development of internal project trackers, conducting research, supporting data collection and entry, and additional ad‑hoc data management support.

The ideal candidate has strong attention to detail and is highly skilled in data analysis, including database management, data audits, and presenting data in a digestible, professional format. This role will require exceptional communication skills, written and verbal, to support the effective management of client city portfolios.

This role will be part‑time, working 20 hours per week, on average. The Fellow will be on an initial 6‑month contract.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with the Operations Team to maintain and improve systems for tracking project activity and organizational performance across cities and practice areas.
  • Create internal trackers to monitor project status and impact across nine disciplines.
  • Analyze, clean, and transfer quantitative and qualitative data between internal project management tools.
  • Conduct periodic data audits and request missing information when necessary. Lead the development of new processes and outputs for internal reporting based on needs of BA teams.
  • Advise on usability of internal tools and strategies to improve efficiencies.
  • Conduct in‑depth and comparative research on a range of topics related to organizational improvement and growth, as well as prospective client cities.
  • Assist with coordination and follow‑up across city engagement activities, including meetings with internal teams and city‑based project managers.
  • Help update and maintain internal resources and training materials used by project teams and staff embedded in client cities.
  • Contribute to efforts to improve consistency, efficiency, and usability across internal project management and reporting workflows.
Qualifications of the ideal candidate

We seek dedicated, curious individuals with outstanding research, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Other qualifications include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field and a minimum of two years’ relevant professional experience in affordable housing, urban planning, or public/non‑profit administration. Master’s degree is a plus.
  • Background in project management, consulting, operations or a similar field.
  • Strong understanding of data analysis and Excel.
  • Strong communication skills – both written and verbal – with the ability to translate data and process updates into clear summaries and presentations.
  • Ability to become familiar with new software tools quickly and independently.
  • Experience with Airtable a plus, but not required.
  • Strong familiarity with project management software tools, methodologies, and best practices.
  • Strong understanding to navigate matrixed and complex organizations.
  • Proven ability to solve problems creatively and excellent analytical and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience seeing projects through the full life cycle.
