Job summary

University of the Pacific seeks a Senior Manager/Assistant Director Environmental Health, Safety and Biosafety to lead campus biosafety and EH&S programs. The role serves as the designated BSO under NIH guidelines, supporting researchers with NIH and other federal grants by ensuring biosafety disposal plans and safety protocols are in place.

The position involves hands-on management of chemical and biohazardous waste, inspections, training, and regulatory compliance, with 30–40% biosafety focus.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in biological sciences, life sciences, bioengineering, chemistry, environmental science, occupational safety and health, or related discipline.
• Three (3) years of work experience in occupational and environmental health and safety, focusing on hazardous materials and waste management, laboratory safety, and biosafety.
• Five (5) years of work experience in occupational and environmental health and safety, focusing on hazardous materials and waste management, laboratory safety, and biosafety.

Responsibilities

• Develop, implement, and manage a comprehensive biosafety program ensuring compliance with NIH/CDC/Cal/OSHA guidelines.
• Serve as Institutional Biosafety Officer (IBO) and maintain NIH registrations for federal compliance.
• Regulatory liaison to NIH, CDC, CDPH, USDA/APHIS; conduct biological risk assessments.
• Review grant applications for biohazardous materials; advise PIs on safety controls and disposal plans.
• Provide guidance to researchers to ensure compliant biosafety in grant proposals and approvals.
• Coordinate Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) operations and maintain memberships.
• Support NIH DURC policy and Select Agent regulations compliance.
• Conduct routine lab inspections and develop corrective actions to promote safety.
