Job summary

GE HealthCare is seeking a Biomedical Equipment Technician to respond to service calls, diagnose and repair basic biomedical equipment, and perform preventive maintenance at customer hospital sites in the Newport News area.

Under supervision, you will assist more experienced technicians, document actions, and ensure compliance with GE policies and hospital protocols. On-call rotation and after-hours coverage may be required.

Qualifications

  • Associate or bachelor-level education in electrical/biomedical/mechanical engineering or equivalent military training.
  • Demonstrated ability to explain technical issues clearly to customers.
  • Willingness to work after hours or rotate on-call shifts, including weekends.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and work eligibility in the U.S.

Job Description Summary

Responds to service calls to evaluate, diagnose, and perform repair and planned maintenance (PM) on customers’ basic biomedical equipment. Provides onsite support at customer hospital locations in the Newport News VA area, with a focus on service excellence and customer satisfaction.

Responsibilities
  • Under supervision, evaluate basic customer biomedical equipment issues, implement appropriate repairs, and perform PM and safety/environmental inspections as assigned.
  • Assist more experienced technicians on basic and more complex repairs/resolution.
  • Communicate effectively and partner with teammates and colleagues.
  • Follow GE policies, procedures, hospital protocol, and complete documentation.
  • Maintain daily communications with customers to ensure resolution and follow‑up, supporting strong customer relations.
  • Implement GE/customer facility contract and support business goals/objectives as instructed.
  • Work as a member of the local team to provide efficient service delivery to all accounts within the assigned area.
  • When trained, share on‑call responsibility.
  • Document all repair actions and submit reports/summaries on schedule.
  • Ensure proper care of spares, tools, and test equipment, and ensure calibration.
  • Enhance and maintain technical knowledge of current standards, codes, and procedures for safe and effective use of medical equipment through formal instruction.
  • Use available resources (manuals, tech support, online resources) to answer questions when performing PM.
  • Meet Health and Human Services, Environmental Health and Safety requirements, and all applicable regulatory requirements.
Required Qualifications
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field; or equivalent military education to an Associate’s or Bachelor’s level; or participant in the formal GEHC Biomed/FE Services Internship, Apprenticeship, or Military Externship program; or high school diploma/GED and a minimum of two years of experience servicing electrical, electronics, IT, or mechanical equipment.
  • Analytical and communication skills with the ability to explain technical issues to customers in an easy‑to‑understand manner.
  • Willingness to be available after hours or work a rotating on‑call schedule, including weekends, for critical issues and coverage as necessary.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to maintain it.
  • Compliance with GEHC’s standard background check and customer access policies, including required immunizations, drug tests, and federal background checks if applicable.
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. and no sponsorship for employment visas.
Special Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 35 lbs unassisted; frequently bend, stoop, twist, climb, crouch/squat, kneel/crawl, sit, and stand for long periods.
  • Ability to reach above and below shoulder level, flex/extend neck, and possess good hand and finger dexterity.
