Job summary

Belmont University in Nashville invites eligible undergraduates to join the Biology Department as a Federal Work-Study lab assistant. This on-site, part-time role offers hands-on laboratory experience supporting media preparation, specimen care, and equipment setup in a collaborative environment.

You will follow written and verbal instructions, work with faculty to keep the lab stocked and clean, and adhere to safety protocols and PPE requirements.

Qualifications

• Must be enrolled as Belmont University undergraduate.
• Must be eligible for Federal Work-Study funds.
• Available to work up to eight hours per week.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and work independently or in a team.
• Adherence to laboratory safety policies and PPE requirements.

Responsibilities

• Prepare media/reagents, aliquot solutions, and handle chemicals.
• Care for living specimens and preserved specimens.
• Move and distribute equipment, models, supplies, and glassware.
• Set up, maintain, and troubleshoot instruments and other electronic devices.
• Install software, configure, backup, and troubleshoot computer systems.
• Clean laboratory surfaces, equipment, supplies, and glassware.
• Communicate with faculty and staff to keep lab activities set up, restocked, and cleaned up.
• Collect, segregate, and dispose of laboratory wastes properly.
• Complete work assignments safely using PPE and other safety devices.
• Assist with inventory control, SDS collection, and data entry operations.
• Perform other general laboratory tasks as assigned.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Required Qualifications

**Applicants must receiveFederal Work Study (FWS) funds in their financial aid packages and be availableto work up to eight hours each week. This position will allow an applicant toearn all FWS funds during the academic year. Therefore, applicants may not holda second FWS position while working for the Department of Biology.

Applicantsmust be able to follow written and verbal instructions, attend trainingsessions, complete assigned tasks independently or within a team, demonstratestrong communication skills, and handle sensitive information in a professionalmanner.

Adherence to laboratory safety and health policies is required,including the use of all necessary personal protective equipment and othersafety devices.

Required Education Applicants must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate student at Belmont University and must major or minor in Biology, Environmental Science, Neuroscience, or Biochemistry & Molecular Biology.

Required Experience Applicants must be currently enrolled in laboratory courses or must have taken laboratory courses within the Department of Biology.
