You will direct second shift bindery activities, manage cutting, folding, saddle-stitching, perfect binding, die cutting, and related processes, while ensuring accuracy, quality, and on-time delivery.

Job description

DG3 is seeking an experienced Bindery Supervisor to lead second shift offset bindery operations. The ideal candidate has hands-on offset finishing experience and a background supporting both commercial and financial print work, including accuracy- and deadline-sensitive jobs such as statements, proxies, and prospectuses. Responsible for the efficient operation of all offset bindery equipment and processes, and for the quality, accuracy, and timeliness of finished products on second shift.

Accountabilities
  • Directs second shift bindery activities to meet customer requirements for quality, quantity, and delivery, while supporting annual Company operational goals.
  • Supervises offset finishing operations — cutting, folding, saddle-stitching, perfect binding, die cutting, and related processes.
  • Applies heightened attention to accuracy, sequencing, and chain-of-custody on financial print work (statements, proxies, prospectuses, and similar compliance-sensitive jobs).
  • Prioritizes and assigns work and makes manning recommendations to the Director, Bindery.
  • Works closely with press, prepress, and stock departments in the fulfillment of bindery functions; coordinates with the shipping and fulfillment departments to meet job deadlines.
  • Works with scheduling to establish machine priorities and, when necessary, with customer service on special requests to satisfy customer demands.
  • Monitors job specifications in Monarch (or other print MIS) against work in progress; troubleshoots makeready, sequencing, and quality issues.
  • Meets material, waste, and spoilage standards.
  • Achieves a high level of employee efficiency and morale through leadership and sound management practices.
  • Establishes clearly defined areas of responsibility for all bindery employees and holds them accountable for results.
  • Organizes effective training programs on offset finishing equipment to upgrade and advance individuals as openings develop.
  • Enforce strict adherence to maintenance routines and standards of order and cleanliness in the bindery area.
  • Procures departmental supplies and coordinates equipment repairs.
  • Assures the proper reporting of time and material by bindery employees.
  • Maintains an inventory system on all bindery-related materials and supplies.
  • Keeps abreast of technical developments in offset finishing that may affect the department’s efficiency and profitability.
  • Defines responsibilities and communicates established performance standards to subordinates; supervises application of policies and procedures.
  • Provides advisory support to Sales and Estimating on the technical and capacity capabilities of the bindery.
  • Administers company policies and directives; maintains effective relationships with employees.
  • Sets the example for proper workplace conduct and safe, efficient equipment operation.
  • Improves workflow by eliminating stoppages, analyzing delays, and trying new methods.
  • Meets production financial standards by monitoring costs and implementing corrective actions.
  • Performs other tasks as requested.
  • Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the second shift bindery unit.
  • Fulfills supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies, any applicable collective bargaining agreement, and applicable laws.
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Extensive knowledge of production processes related to bindery activities, equipment, materials, products, and personnel.
  • Hands-on ability to operate and troubleshoot offset finishing equipment.
  • Background in commercial print required; financial print experience (accuracy- and compliance-sensitive work) strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with print MIS systems (EFI Monarch a plus).
  • Demonstrated skills in leadership, organization, and communication.
  • Ability to anticipate problems and head them off.
  • Knowledge of general maintenance procedures and the ability to develop new techniques for handling work.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the public.
  • Ability to collaborate with others generates ideas and improves processes.
  • Must interpret verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to work second shift consistently.
Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma or associate’s degree.
  • Minimum five years’ experience working in a bindery, including supervisory experience, with hands-on exposure to offset finishing.
  • Experience in commercial print required; financial print experience strongly preferred.

Work Environment: The job is primarily performed in a manufacturing and/or warehouse environment that may be noisy, hot, and humid. The environment can be stressful at times with deadline pressure to complete multiple priorities, particularly around financial print deadlines. This is a second shift position. Minimal, less than 10%, travel required.
