Job summary

Houston Area Women's Center seeks a Residential Mentor to oversee safety and day-to-day needs of women and children in a domestic violence shelter. You will provide peer counseling, mentoring, and crisis support to help clients acclimate to communal living.

Qualifications include an Associate or Bachelor’s in psychology/social work/criminal justice with relevant experience, fluency in English and Spanish, and proficiency in MS Office.

Qualifications

  • Associates Degree in Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, Public Health, or Criminal Justice and 3 years of experience
  • OR Bachelor's Degree in Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, or Criminal Justice and 1 year of experience
  • Experience in social services, case management, or related field (1–3 years depending on education level)
  • Fluent reading/speaking/writing in English and Spanish
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, Teams)
  • Valid Texas Driver's License with good driving record

Responsibilities

  • Work directly with clients in a domestic violence shelter providing mentoring, crisis intervention, safety planning, and supportive services
  • Model and teach non-violent conflict resolution; mediate between residents as needed
  • Assign and monitor residents' personal responsibilities in the communal living environment
  • Conduct orientations, intakes, group house meetings, and exit processes
  • Enforce residential policies to ensure compliance with grantors/funding sources
  • Attend Case Meetings; develop plans to address client issues
  • Communicate with other departments to resolve client needs
  • Create resident files and record services using HMIS software
  • Maintain payroll paperwork and accurate records/statistics
  • Maintain safety and cleanliness of communal living areas
  • Report unsafe activities and complete incident reports
  • Perform light housekeeping duties
  • Report abuse/neglect to Child/Adult Protective Services
  • Other duties as assigned

As the Residential Mentor, you will oversee the safety, general welfare, and day-to-day needs of the women and children staying in the domestic violence shelter. You will help clients acclimate to a communal living environment by providing peer counseling/support, education, and mentoring.

Your Schedule:

Full-time

Tues - Saturday 3:00 p.m.-12:00 a.m. (Shift 2)

Work Model: 100% onsite

Local Travel: 25%

  • Hourly Compensation: $21.63
  • Pay Schedule: Semi-monthly

Qualifications

The Requirements We are Seeking:

  • Associates Degree in Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, Public Health, or Criminal Justice and 3 years of experience
  • OR
  • Bachelor's Degree in Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, or Criminal Justice and 1 year of experience
  • Experience within social services, case management, or similar field (1-3 years depending on education level).
  • Ability to read, speak and write both English and Spanish fluently.
  • Proficient knowledge with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, Teams)
  • Valid Texas Driver's License with a good driving record.
What you Deliver in this role:
  • You will work directly with clients in a domestic violence shelter by providing mentoring, crisis intervention, safety planning, and supportive services.
  • You will provide mediation between residents when needed by modeling and teaching non-violent conflict resolution skills.
  • You will assign and monitor residents’ personal responsibilities in the communal living environment.
  • You will conduct individual orientations, intakes, group house meetings, exit processes etc.
  • You will enforce residential policies to ensure compliance with grantors and funding sources.
  • You will attend Case Meetings for feedback and information and to develop working plans to address client issues.
  • You would communicate with other departments of the agency to resolve client needs.
  • You will create resident files and record client services by existing deadlines via HMIS software.
  • You will complete all necessary paperwork for payroll, reimbursements and maintain accurate records, statistics, etc.
  • You will maintain safety and cleanliness of communal living areas.
  • You will report unsafe activities and complete incident reports for accidents, hazardous practices, etc.
  • You will also perform light housekeeping duties.
  • You will report abuse/neglect to either Child and/or Adult Protective Services.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
