Job summary

Brown University Health is seeking a Medical Interpreter to provide high-quality oral and written interpretation for non-English speaking patients and staff at Rhode Island Hospital. The role supports patient care by translating medical questions, responses and paperwork, including sign language interpretation for Deaf and Hard of Hearing patients, and guiding patients through forms and procedures.

The interpreter will work under the supervision of the Manager Interpreter Services & Information

Qualifications

  • Fluency in English and target foreign language.
  • Medical Interpreter Training Program certificate or equivalent.
  • Proficiency in Medical Terminology in English and target language.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for emotionally charged medical settings.

Responsibilities

  • Provide oral and written interpretation for non-English and Sign Language patients.
  • Interpret medical providers' questions and instructions in person or by telephone.
  • Interview patients to complete required forms.
  • Schedule and direct patients to appointments and assist with paperwork.
  • Explain billing, services and procedures to patients and families.
  • Bridge cultural beliefs and practices with American medical care.
  • Coordinate with external institutions and agencies as needed.
  • Provide training to staff on cultural and language issues.
  • Translate medical documents and information for staff and patients.
  • Maintain documentation and logs.
  • Uphold quality, safety and infection control standards.
