Job summary

Advocate Health is seeking a part-time Medical Interpreter to provide confidential language services for patients and health care teams in Wisconsin. You will interpret in diverse clinical settings, support communication with physicians, nurses and pharmacists, and ensure accurate documentation in medical records.

Qualifications

• Must be bilingual in target language and English with proven linguistic abilities in medical interpreting.
• Professional command of bilingual medical terminology; anatomy, physiology, diagnostic process, treatment, prevention and health education models.
• Knowledge concerning the ethics of medical interpreting as outlined by the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC).
• Understanding of the cultural aspects of the medical community as well as the cultural identity of patients with limited English proficiency.
• Ability to work in challenging situations involving difficult messages including death and dying.
• Excellent human relations and communication skills.
• Basic computer skills.
• Ability to utilize video interpreting techniques.

Responsibilities

• Provides interpretation for patients, families and health care team in clinical settings.
• Encourages communication between patient and health care team to build rapport.
• Collaborates with social services, behavioral health, financial counseling, and chaplaincy.
• Documents work activity and certifies interpretation in patient records.
• May assist with referrals, transportation, insurance processes and site translations.
• Adheres to laws governing medical interpreting and patient care.
• Assesses patients’ age-specific needs and informs relevant department standards.
