Job summary

Hackensack Meridian Health in New Jersey seeks a Staff Interpreter to bridge language barriers for non-English speaking patients and families. You will provide accurate oral interpretation, communicate with patients, families, providers and staff, and uphold confidentiality and respectful care.

Qualifications

• High School diploma, GED, or GED equivalent programs.
• Minimum of one year of experience as an interpreter.
• Ability to speak English and other language fluently.
• In depth knowledge of medical terminology, and successfully pass a medical terminology course.
• Knowledge and ability to articulate cultural and perceptual factors affecting communication.
• Teamwork oriented, commitment to customer service excellence and collaborative approach.
• Rotating schedule/shifts that may include weekends and/or holidays.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office and Google Suite.

Responsibilities

• Assists patients/families and providers to engage in open and clear communication.
• Provides accurate oral interpretation for non-English speaking patients and families.
• Communicates clearly, courteously, and responsibly with patients, families, providers, hospital staff and all visitors.
• Maintains a high level of confidentiality and non-bias behavior.
• Utilizes the appropriate standards and approach to the interpretative process.
• Conducts purposeful rounding for outcomes on all patients/families utilizing department approved scripting.
• Communicates observations affecting compliance to the healthcare team.
• Demonstrates the ability to work under pressure with diverse members of the team, patients and families.
• Complies with established departmental policies and procedures.
• Provides customer relations services and responds to non-clinical comfort needs.
• Ability to work in challenging situations including delivering difficult messages.
• Maintains an environment that promotes patient and personal safety.
• Assists in helping patients move through the hospital system.
• Other duties and/or projects as assigned.

Education

High School diploma, GED, and/or GED equivalent programs

Associate's or Bachelor's Degree

Certification in medical interpreter training
