Qualifications
- Baccalaureate in a Human Service field with six months to one year of direct child care work with children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
- OR Associates Degree in a Human Service field with 2 years of experience with children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
- OR 5 years of experience with children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Preference for individuals with experience implementing Applied Behavior Analysis procedures with children and/or adolescents, including data collection, reinforcement, and instructional procedures.
Job Summary
- Under the oversight of the Clinical Nurse Manager and daily monitoring by the Behavior Specialist Supervisor, responsible for implementing the therapeutic treatment plan and ensuring patient safety. Collaborates with the interdisciplinary treatment team, collects data for functional assessment, observes and records patient responses to interventions, and documents this under the supervision of a registered nurse and BCBA. Provides care to assigned patients under RN direction.
Physical Demands
- Must be able to participate in physical management of patients, including safe body positioning, blocking and deflecting aggression, physically holding struggling patients using approved methods, and lifting up to fifty pounds. Also requires reaching, grasping, bending, squatting, kneeling, and occasional running, with frequent standing, walking, and sitting.
Cognitive Demands
- Application of learned knowledge with basic follow-through, limited inference, and attention to detail. Familiarity with medical terminology required. Strong communication skills needed for expressing complex ideas, negotiation, and active listening. Ability to comprehend lengthy messages and follow multistage commands. Flexibility in thought, reasoning, and organization necessary.
Work Demands
- Work in a behavioral management setting under stressful conditions, utilizing de-escalation techniques to minimize physical interventions. Ability to remain calm and make quick, rational decisions to prioritize patient safety.
Essential Functions
- Maintain a safe, therapeutic environment, intervene in destructive behaviors, and provide timely therapeutic interventions as per behavior plans.
- Observe and document patient behavior as ordered, supervise daily routines, assist with activities of daily living, and report issues promptly.
- Participate in hand-offs, review behavior intervention plans, engage in activities with patients, and participate in family training as assigned.
- Handle crisis situations safely, de-escalate patient distress, and perform other duties as directed by the charge nurse.
