Job summary

Oceans Healthcare in Corpus Christi, TX is seeking a Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) to support nursing staff and maintain a therapeutic milieu for patients with anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns. The role emphasizes documentation, patient observation, and collaboration with licensed nurses.

You will perform vital signs, assist with activities of daily living, monitor nutritional intake, and help keep a safe, respectful environment in line with Joint Commission and state

Qualifications

• Must read, write and follow verbal and written instruction.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Must work well with diverse populations.
• Must utilize age, disability and cultural knowledge in working with specialized populations.
• Must be in good physical and mental health with a warm empathetic attitude and integrity.
• Must be able to work under close supervision.
• Must complete Basic Life Support (BLS) and Oceans approved de-escalation program.

Responsibilities

• Continually monitors and supports compliance within unit rules.
• Demonstrates de-escalation and therapeutic interventions as needed.
• Inventories patient belongings accurately and secures contraband; completes unit safety checks.
• Complies with standard/universal precautions and infection control policies; attends required in-services to stay informed.
• Implements patient care activities under supervision: vital signs, weights, ADL, nutritional monitoring; communicates findings to the nurse.
• Assists patients with laundry, meals, bathroom functions and maintenance of belongings; aids at-risk or physically challenged patients with mobility needs.
• Individualizes patient care activities to age, disability, and cultural needs.
• Documents patient observation related to behavior and location; records nutritional intake, weights, liquids, vital signs, and output.
• Communicates task outcomes to nursing staff and follows up as needed to ensure continuity of care.
• Performs other duties and projects as assigned.
