Job summary

Safe Harbor Recovery Center in Portsmouth, VA seeks a Behavioral Health Associate II (QMHP Preferred) to join the multidisciplinary team. You will monitor client behaviors, provide continuous care, and respond to crises while supporting treatment goals.

The role requires CPR and de-escalation certification, at least one year of BHA experience, and familiarity with psychiatric populations. Competitive benefits accompany the position.

Qualifications

• High school graduate or equivalent.
• At least one year experience as a BHA required.
• One or more years' experience working with the specific population of the facility required.
• Knowledge of common psychiatric disorders and/or dual diagnosis and various treatment modalities of the population served preferred.
• CPR and de-escalation certification required (training available upon hire and offered by facility).
• First aid may be required based on state or facility requirements.

Responsibilities

• Ensures the wellbeing of clients and provides a safe, positive, supportive, and structured environment.
• Conducts safety checks and ensures supervision is conducted at intervals in accordance with guidelines.
• Checks clients for contraband and manages valuables and belongings.
• Interacts with clients and communicates significant observations to supervisor.
• Engages clients in activities and interactions to achieve treatment goals.
• Facilitates educational-rehabilitative groups on social skills, coping, anger management, and independent living skills.
• Record vital signs and communicate changes to the charge nurse.
• Documents in client records timely and accurately.
• Applies de-escalation techniques to manage emotions and participation.
• Assists with unit organization, admissions/discharges, and incident reports.
• Provides transportation for clients or coordinates transport with staff.
• Prepares verbal reports to the oncoming shift.
• Serves as a resource for new clients and orients them to programs and activities.
• Maintains awareness of client needs and goals while motivating participation.
• Assists with activity planning and provides resources for activities.
• Organizes equipment for activities and provides supplies as needed.
• Enforces safety rules and adapts activities for groups.
