Qualifications

Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Behavior Program Associate I is responsible for duties aimed at improving the quality of life and mental well-being of dogs in Seattle Humane’s care, and fostering successful lifelong relationships between people and pets. This role supports the behavioral development of dogs both in the shelter and in preparing them for successful adoption. The associate adheres to Seattle Humane’s mission, goals, and philosophy, including LIMA (Least Invasive Minimally Aversive) guidelines.

KEY or ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Assist BPA II, III, and BPM in reviewing behavior histories and observations, and in creating and implementing behavior management and modification plans for dogs and cats.
  • Process “Behavior Review” and other behavior holds, making necessary updates to behavior plans.
  • Collaborate with the behavior team to develop comprehensive behavior plans for caseload animals.
  • Conduct behavior check-ins, document updates, and maintain records.
  • Provide behavior advising for adopters, foster parents, and the public on mild to moderate behavior issues.
  • Implement shelter animal behavior programs to reduce stress, enhance well-being, and increase successful placements.
  • Coordinate with other departments regarding behavior and handling of specific animals.
  • Work closely with volunteers in the Behavior Program, providing support as needed.
  • Assist with shelter dog playgroups, including introductions and assessments.
  • Support handling during behavior euthanasia as needed.
  • Maintain files and records according to policy.
  • Attend meetings as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Behavior Program Manager or Animal Care Director.
Qualifications

Knowledge/Experience/Education:

  • Intermediate knowledge of dog body language and behavior.
  • Knowledge of learning theory and behavior principles is a plus.
  • Experience advising potential adopters is preferred.
  • Experience handling animals in shelter or kennel settings.
  • Experience supervising or assisting with dog playgroups preferred.
  • Ability to recognize common dog and cat diseases.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

Licenses/Certifications:

  1. Certification from an animal behavior training course or school is preferred.

Physical and Mental Requirements: Must be able to communicate clearly, see, hear, and write legibly. Capable of handling animals up to 50 pounds unaided, and over 50 pounds with assistance. Able to work in various environments, remain focused amidst interruptions, and handle emotionally charged situations. Must exhibit initiative, good time management, and motivation.

Working Conditions

Work occurs in office, kennel, and outdoor settings, with potential hazards including chemicals, animal bites, zoonotic diseases, and noise. Must follow safety protocols and use appropriate equipment.

Equipment Used

Computer, printer, phone, radio, collection tools, microchip scanner, leashes, collars, harnesses, gloves, and basic office equipment.

Work Hours

40 hours/week, including at least one weekend day, with shifts determined by the Behavior Program Manager.
