The Bureau of Criminal Identification (BCI) serves as Utah’s repository for criminal history records as well as the Sex Offender, Kidnap and Child Abuse Registries. This position supports managing, maintaining, disseminating and updating of these criminal histories and registries. A successful candidate may be responsible for:
Fingerprinting (primary task during internship 1 year): BCI provides public fingerprinting for non-criminal justice purposes using both traditional ink methods as well as electronic fingerprint capture devices.
Data Entry and Record Maintenance: Performing data entry and updates for criminal records, including demographic and charge information.
Research and Analysis: Accurately compiling, comparing, and researching criminal history records to ensure data accuracy for critical determinations, including employment, expungement, and firearm ownership eligibility. This includes locating and connecting court disposition information with corresponding criminal incidents.
Confidentiality and Professionalism: Maintaining the utmost discretion and professionalism when handling sensitive and confidential criminal history information and adhering to both State and Federal laws for criminal justice information security.
Customer Service: Providing excellent customer service through in person interactions, phone calls, email and chat. This includes problem solving and critical thinking to help resolve situations.
Fingerprint Comparison and Processing: The Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) utilizes fingerprints to identify individuals who have criminal records. This includes the capture, comparison, maintenance and knowledge of the ABIS system.
Technical Support: Performing technical support for users of the Utah Criminal Justice Information System, the Applicant Background Check System as well as other applications used by Criminal Justice Agencies and Qualifying Entities. This includes creating users and agency accounts, password maintenance and general assistance with use of various web based systems.
Non-Criminal Background Checks: Providing background check (criminal history records) information or clearance for qualifying entities, firearms background checks, personal records checks and challenges.
Sex Offender, Kidnap and Child Abuse Registry: Case investigation to ensure all relevant cases are identified and processed. Maintenance of the public website, law enforcement databases while ensuring accuracy. Provide training and support as well as expert court testimony. Review requests for early removal.
Concealed Firearm Permits: Process applications for the Utah Concealed Firearm Permit including customer service, fingerprint processing, permit printing and investigation referrals.
Expungements: Application processing for petition based expungement. Investigate record research and determination of eligibility. Processing auto expungements in coordination with the Administrative Office of the Courts.
