Job description

The University of Virginia, Facilities Management (FM), is seeking a BAS Application Engineer. BAS Application Engineers provide technical expertise and support on building automation system (BAS) for building mechanical systems, infrastructure systems, energy generation, and distribution systems. They are responsible for identifying, evaluating, implementing, and programming new BAS technologies. BAS Application Engineers are responsible for making decisions required to implement control system projects and programs, including technology choices and programming strategies. They possess advanced problem solving and programming knowledge of electronic controllers. BA law Application Engineers provide proven competency in electronics, electrical, and mechanical systems. They may also train users, mechanics, and less senior control technicians in electronic controllers.

Facilities Management (FM) supports the University of Virginia's wide range of research, academic, and patient care programs. With over 1,200 employees dedicated to excellence, Facilities Management is responsible for the day-to-day operation, repair, and maintenance of UVA's buildings, infrastructure, and grounds, in addition to managing capital construction and renovation for University-owned and leased properties.

FM's Automation Services Department installs, maintains, and optimizes the building automation system (BAS) infrastructure throughout the University. The department has three core teams; Construction and Renovation, Service, and Engineering. The engineering team is composed of eight members representing a variety of disciplines (networking, test and balance, and design/project management) who report directly to the Engineering Manager.

Duties Include:
  • Develop control system submittal documents, BAS architecture, programming, and graphics based on project requirements for in-house controls projects.
  • Evaluate, recommend, and implement projects approved for construction by in-house staff; including scoping and pricing labor, materials, equipment, hardware, software selection, control architecture development, programming, graphics and related project requirements.
  • Provide ongoing BAS technical support for Automation Services and other Facilities Management stakeholders.
  • Identify and implement best software and hardware technologies to support programming strategies.
  • Effectively communicate with construction project teams to transform the BAS design into a functioning system in operation.
  • Participate in maintaining, implementing, and administering the UVA BAS Standards.
  • Contribute towards the realization of UVA's 2020 - 2030 Sustainability Plan (carbon neutral by 2030 and fossil fuel free by 2050).
  • Participate in project management and commissioning efforts by attending construction meetings, inspecting work, reviewing tests, assisting in resolving system performance issues, and providing written reports of findings and recommendations.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
Required Qualifications:
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience: Five years of relevant experience related to BAS or other related electronics field with two years of experience with programming logic. Five years of experience with hardware design and programming logic with Automated Logic or Johnson Controls is preferred.
  • Licensure: Recognized controls industry certification (this could include but is not limited to licensure in a skilled trade or possession of a CCST, CEM, or a commissioning industry certificate such as BCxP) or successful completion of two or more controls vendor development courses.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Direct experience developing and deploying Johnson Controls Metasys or Automated Logic WebCTRL systems is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with commercial construction/contracting strongly preferred.
Compensation:

The Anticipated Hiring Range for this position is $70,000 - $78,000; actual starting salary will be commensurate with relevant experience and skills. This is a full-time position with UVA benefits. Employee benefits package highlights include:

Physical Demands:

Employee will be required to crawl, kneel, squat, bend, and twist in order to perform their work. Employee must travel around job sites. Employee will work with materials of different weights and perform repetitive motions.
