Job summary

The University of Georgia Center for Continuing Education & Hotel is seeking a Banquet Captain to lead banquet teams during large events and meetings on campus. The role covers event setup, running events, directing staff, and room breakdown to department standards.

Cash/credit handling may be required. Responsibilities include setting up stations, assisting with menus, maintaining safety and sanitation, adhering to schedules, and ensuring rooms are prepared well before events.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in setting up events including moving tables, setting tables and chairs, staging, portable stairs, podiums, buffet set-up, bar set-up, equipment for speakers, etc.
  • Follow operational standards that exceed our customers' expectations for cleanliness, food presentation, and quality.
  • Complete all necessary work for future banquet events, as directed.
  • Ensure all meeting and eventrooms are prepared for clients/guest a minimum of 2 hours prior to contracted time.
  • Read and interpret Banquet Event Orders (BEOs) and planning sheets from Banquet management team.
  • Clean up after the function: sweep, mop, clear dishes from tables, reorganize back aisle or staging areas as assigned, put equipment and supplies away in their proper storage areas.
  • Handle cash/credit cards at times.

Position Summary

At the Georgia Center, the Banquet Captain assists the banquet team to create the optimal atmosphere for large events and meetings. The incumbent is responsible for event set-up, running events, helping direct banquet staff, along with maintenance; and the breakdown of meeting and banquet rooms according to department standards. Handling cash/credit cards may be required at times.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
  • Thorough knowledge of the material methods and equipment used in setting large scale events.
  • Help set up workstations with all needed supplies and equipment.
  • Assist with menu development, specify product standards, control and maintain food inventories, adhere to recipes, and ensure smooth and safe operations.
  • Maintain a safe and sanitary work environment.
  • Set up and prepare dining areas in accordance with production schedules.
  • Exercise good decision-making and proactively make changes as needed.
  • Work long hours while standing and under conditions of high temperatures.
  • Communicate effectively and follow direction from supervisor.
Physical Demands
  • Move loads up to 50 lbs., unloading and stocking products.
  • Perform push/pull activity with products weighing up to 30 lbs.
  • Perform duties with repetitive motion of wrists, arm, and shoulder; hand and finger coordination.
  • Reach, climb, balance, crouch, twist, crawl, and kneel.
  • Work in noisy, hot/cold environments with chemicals, cleaning equipment, dust, fumes, and odors.
  • Work long hours standing.
  • Drive to perform job duties.
