Job summary

Graphic Packaging International is seeking a dependable operator to run baling equipment and shred waste sheets, ensuring efficient handling of bales at our Winston-Salem facility.

You will operate a powered industrial vehicle, load materials, weigh bales, and ensure safety procedures are followed. Manufacturing experience and forklift/pallet jack proficiency are preferred; strong attendance and overtime willingness are required.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Manufacturing experience preferred.
  • Experience operating hand jacks, electric pallet jacks and forklifts preferred.
  • Excellent attendance and ability to work independently.

Responsibilities

  • Safely operate a Powered Industrial Vehicle.
  • Trucks or carry materials to baling machine. Places materials in compression chamber of baling machine
  • Moves lever or electric switch, causing ram to compress material
  • Threads tie bands around bale and twists or clamps ends of bands to tighten bands
  • Opens compression chamber doors and removes bale from machine
  • Trucks bales to storage area, weighs bales, and records weight
  • Lines compression chamber of baling machine with paper, before baling
  • Ties wrapping in place after baling, and marks bales
  • Must be able to recognize different types of waste and bale it accordingly
  • Other duties assigned

JOB SUMMARY

Operate and maintain machine(s) that shreds waste sheets/cartons and compresses and binds waste paper to facilitate handling by performing the following duties.

BACKGROUND / EXPERIENCE
  • Manufacturing experience preferred
  • Experience operating hand jacks, electric pallet jacks and forklifts preferred
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must have excellent attendance, be able to work independently and be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
SKILLS
  • LANGUAGE SKILLS - Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. Bilingual in English/Spanish is a plus.
  • MATHEMATICAL SKILLS - Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
EDUCATION / KNOWLEDGE
  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent required.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS:
  • Schedules are 8-hour shifts Monday– Friday. 3rd shift schedule Sunday – Thursday.
  • Employees are required to work overtime to include up to 12-hour shifts including weekends.
  • Employees must be willing to work alternate schedules and overtime that may include early mornings, nights, and/or weekends and be punctual while doing so.

  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Awkward and/or repetitive movements
  • Ability to stand, bend, squat, climb (up to 2ft), reach above shoulder and at waist or lower, push/pull force up to 15lbs, carry, walk and stoop occasionally (1-33% of the time)
  • Ability to twist frequently (34-66% of the time)
  • Ability to grasp and sit continuously
  • Lifting up to 75 lbs occasionally
  • Requires use of both feet
  • Requires use of both hands for simple grasping, firm grasping, fine manipulation and repetitive actions continuously
  • Ability to read, write, hear, see, speak and have agility on a continuous basis
  • Reading computer screen or other electronic devices
  • Use of various hand and electrical tools and equipment
  • Work in areas of fluctuating temperature
  • PPE required: Steel-toed/safety footwear, Safety Glasses, Hearing Protection, Cut resistant Safety Gloves, Hair Net, Beard Net
Safe Quality Food Responsibilities
  • Follow all Plant rules, Processes, Hygiene, and Allergens procedures, related to production of Safe Quality Foods.
  • Report to person of authority to record any potentially unsafe conditions which may result in unsafe foods or noncompliance to SQF related procedures.
  • Participate in SQF Root Cause and Corrective Actions (from customer complaints, SQF audits, validation, and verification activities) as required.
  • Follow all procedures related to producing Safe Quality Foods (SQF).
  • Report any potentially unsafe SQF conditions or customer complaints to a person of authority to record and/or correct the situation.
