City of Pierre seeks a Solid Waste Equipment Operator to operate heavy equipment for collection and disposal of solid waste at the landfill. You will work with loaders, balers, and trucks in all-weather conditions to keep the facility running smoothly.

Qualifications include basic reading/writing, math, and a valid Class A CDL with air brakes and tanker endorsement. The role requires 1–2 years experience or an apprenticeship background, and offers a comprehensive benefits package.

Responsabilidades

• Operate a loader to push solid waste onto a conveyor.
• Operate an overhead hoist system to load bales.
• Drive semi truck with walking floor trailer to haul bales to landfill.
• Operate baler with conveyor and bale bagging system to bale waste.
• Operate loader, scraper, D8 dozer, steel wheel compactor and compost turner.
• Clean daily around the facility, shoveling and pressure-spraying.
• Fuel equipment and perform routine preventive maintenance (oil, filters, fluids).
• Operate garbage truck; backup driver for solid waste collection.
• Conduct random waste inspections at baling facility.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

JOBSUMMARY:This position is responsiblefor operating equipment to collect and dispose of solid waste.

KNOWLEDGEREQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

• oKnowledge of city policies and procedures.

• o Skillin operating such equipment as a bobcat, forklift, and trucks, front endloaders and other heavy equipment.

SUPERVISORYCONTROLS:The Solid Waste Managerassigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions.The work is spot-checked in progress andreviewed upon completion for compliance with established procedures and thenature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES:Guidelines include state and federalregulations, city and safety policies and procedures, and supervisoryinstructions.These guidelines aregenerally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation inapplication.

COMPLEXITY:The work consists of related duties incollecting and transporting solid waste.Varying weather conditions contribute to the complexity of the work.

SCOPEAND EFFECT:The purpose of this positionis to operate equipment used in solid waste handling.Successful performance facilitates the workof the department and helps ensure a safe and pleasant environment for cityresidents.

PHYSICALDEMANDS:The work is typically performedwhile sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping.The employee must frequently lift light and heavy objects, use equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and distinguish between shades of color.

WORKENVIRONMENT:The work is typicallyperformed in a warehouse and outdoors.The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery withmoving parts, irritating chemicals, foul odors, and inclement weather.The work requires the use of protectivedevices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.

SUPERVISORYAND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY:None.

MINIMUMQUALIFICATIONS:

• oAbility to read, write and perform basicmathematical calculations.
• oSufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant
  tothemajor duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
• o Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid Class A commercial driver’s license with airbrakes and tanker endorsement issued by the State of South Dakota.

UP TO A $3,000 HIRING BONUS!Hours involve varying shifts during the week and work on some weekends and holidays.

Category Public Works Status Open Salary $27.62 minimum plus comprehensive benefit package including 100% employer paid employee health, dental and life insurance along with a 6% employer match to the South Dakota Retirement System and 12 paid holidays.
