DELI COMBO CLERK

PURPOSE STATEMENT

To maximize sales and profit in the Bakery and Deli Department through courteous customer service while maintaining optimum department conditions.

Significant Job Responsibilities

• Create an environment that enables customers to feel welcomed and appreciated by answering all questions regarding products sold in the department and throughout the store.
• Bake products including breads, rolls, buns, cakes, pies, pastries, and brownies.
• Wrap, package, and sell bakery and deli products.
• Accurately record customers’ orders/requests for cakes and other bakery items.
• Process customer purchases quickly and accurately using an electronic cash register, scanner, and scale.
• Review the department communication board daily for updates and follow posted guidelines for sampling and announcements.
• Prepare and organize the cooler/freezer/preparation area for receiving merchandise, verify deliveries, inspect for shortages or damage, sort cases for stocking or preparation, and code date all items.
• Adhere to all health codes and regulations, and maintain cleanliness of the department.
• Transport cases to sales floor, cooler, or freezer, open cases, and place merchandise appropriately, checking dates and rotating stock.
• Ensure safety of self, customers, and co-workers by following safety rules and reporting hazards.
• Operate equipment such as balers, slicers, scales, ovens, and more, following safety and operational guidelines.
• Evaluate product quality, handle damaged or unsalable items, and reprocess or markdown as needed.
• Monitor and record temperatures, out-of-stock conditions, and restock inventory.
• Perform miscellaneous tasks as assigned to ensure product availability and customer satisfaction.

Supervision

Reports directly to the Bakery Deli Manager.

Qualifications

Required

• Basic math skills and ability to count.
• Ability to give and receive complex verbal instructions.
• Stable work and educational history.
• Ability to read and write English and understand instructions and labels.
• Good interpersonal communication skills.

Preferred

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Prior experience in similar roles.
• Experience operating relevant equipment (must be 18+ for certain machinery).

Tasks of the Job

• Mobility tasks including receiving, stocking, opening cases, inspecting, building displays, and cleaning; maximum of 8 hours on tile or concrete; lifting up to 50 lbs.; reaching and handling merchandise and equipment; climbing and stocking shelves; handling labels, signs, and transactions; perceiving colors and responding to sounds; using intercom and reading labels and reports.

Work Environment

Inside environment with temperature variations and dust/humidity from equipment and storage areas.
