R.J. Corman Switching Company in Westlake, LA, is seeking a Backhoe Operator/Laborer to support railroad track inspection, installation, and maintenance tasks.

You will operate backhoes and related equipment, perform routine maintenance, and adhere to DOT regulations in a fast-paced outdoor setting. The role requires physical strength and ability to work in varying conditions, with full benefits offered.

Job description

R.J. Corman Switching Company is currently seeking a Backhoe Operator/Laborer to join our team in Westlake, LA.

Responsibilities

• Operates specialized equipment in support of inspection, installation, and maintenance of railroad track.


• Operate specialized equipment (i.e., backhoe, etc.).


• Performs preventative maintenance on heavy or specialized equipment.


• Maintains proper equipment appearance and cleanliness.


• May perform labor duties as needed.


• Communicates with supervisor throughout the job process.


• Ensures working conditions are safe and that proper PPE is being used as job duties require.


• Follow DOT regulations, ensuring proper permits and driving regulations are followed.

Specialized Or Technical Knowledge, Or Education And Experience

• Demonstrated operation experience and equipment knowledge.


• Basic mechanical knowledge to troubleshoot simple mechanical failures.


• Knowledge of DOT regulations, permits, and driving regulations.


• Demonstrated operation experience and equipment knowledge.


• Previous experience in railroad construction or maintenance preferred.

Physical Requirements

• Able to perform physically strenuous work.


• Able to frequently bend, stoop, kneel, and crouch.


• Able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs.


• Requires occasional use of a 30 lb claw bar to remove spikes, requiring application of 50 lbs of force.


• Requires occasional use of a 10 lb sledge hammer to drive spikes, requiring application of 75 lbs of force.


• Able to walk, climb, and maintain balance on equipment, stairs, ladders, uneven terrain, rails, and ballast in a safe manner.


• Able to navigate into confined spaces if necessary.

Environmental Conditions

• Work is performed outside in varying types of environmental conditions.


• Must carry out responsibilities in a fast-paced outside railroad/construction environment.


• Requires efficient development and performance of processes.


• Requires ability to multitask in a time-sensitive environment.


• High-visibility position requiring professional demeanor in interactions with supervisors, employees, contractors, and customers.
