Job summary

WHOOP is seeking a Software Engineer I to contribute to design, development, and maintenance of backend services powering our core product experiences. You will collaborate with engineers, PMs, designers, and data scientists to build scalable, reliable systems that deliver meaningful insights to our members in Boston.

You will contribute to backend services and APIs using Java, Kafka, Postgres, and AWS, while writing clean, tested code, participating in reviews, and supporting production

Qualifications

• Strong problem-solving skills and a growth mindset, with a willingness to seek feedback and continuously improve.
• Interest in distributed systems and event-driven architectures (e.g., Kafka) and cloud platforms such as AWS.
• Familiarity with version control systems such as Git and standard development workflows.
• Professional experience in backend software development (internship, co-op, or academic project experience acceptable).
• Understanding of data structures, algorithms, and system design basics.
• Proficiency in an object-oriented programming language such as Java, or demonstrated ability to quickly learn new backend technologies.
• Experience building or interacting with RESTful APIs and relational databases (e.g., Postgres).

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain backend services that power WHOOP’s core product experiences.
• Collaborate with product managers, designers, and data scientists to translate requirements into technical solutions.
• Write clean, maintainable, and well-tested code and participate in code reviews.
• Support operation and monitoring of production systems to ensure reliability and performance.
• Break down feature requirements into actionable tasks and iterate quickly to deliver value.
• Contribute to technical documentation and knowledge sharing for team velocity.
